Opencpn Sound problem Linux Mint 13

Anyone out there know what the problem is with sound for opencpn 3.0.2 running on Mint 13?
Read all the info and installed lots of stuff including this:- Install a version of libwxgtk2.8-0 that is compiled with support for sdl.
Such versions are available from Index of /.
Download the correct package for your version of debian or Ubuntu and

$sudo dpkg -i ibwxgtk2.8XXXXXX (the proper name of the downloaded version)

Any clues, I am new to Linux..

Re: Opencpn Sound problem Linux Mint 13

I'm not familiar with Mint...
Do you have the sound working generally? Can you play an mp3 for example? If not follow the general sound fixing instructions for Linux, available on the net.
Check Mint forums for any sound problem specific to that distribution.

An other possibility... I have pegged(locked) the wxwidgets.org packages in synaptic, which works OK.
But ... if I try to update/upgrade from the command line, those packages will be replaced by the later version of the standard Ubuntu packages. So be careful, and double check exactly which packages you are using.

Re: Opencpn Sound problem Linux Mint 13

Hello to all,

as I just started my sailing "career" and I was looking for a navigation system with anchor alarm for my laptop, so I found OpenCPN. I installed it on Ubuntu 12.04 as the instructions say it is a straight installation.

Then I recognized the same issue like Quincofish. I tried version 3.0 , 3.02 and now 3.1.174 and also installed my ubuntu severeal times to have a fresh installation. I also tried to solve the sound problem according to the known issues, but nothing helps.

Is there somebody who can help with a step by step instruction how to solve that sound problem - anchor alarm without an alarm is not giving the right direction.

Quincofish & tiberius64

I understand that both of you have sound working generally and have followed these instructions:
Known issues with the current stable release. | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Please come back with the output of this command:
Code:
dpkg-query -l libwxgtk* libsdl* opencpn*

Re: Opencpn Sound problem Linux Mint 13

Hi
I am also running Linux Mint 13, its built on ubuntu 12.04, so here is how I got sound.

1 you down load the files tomas is recomending in his post about ubuntu 12.04
Quote:
wx2.8-headers_2.8.12.1-0_amd64.deb
ibwxbase2.8-0_2.8.12.1-0_amd64.deb
libwxbase2.8-dev_2.8.12.1-0_amd64.deb
libwxgtk2.8-0_2.8.12.1-0_amd64.deb
libwxgtk2.8-dev_2.8.12.1-0_amd64.deb
Index of /dists/squeeze-wx/main

I did use the i386 version since my system is 32bit and I didnt use the headers or dev files.

2 you need to go in to synaptic pakage manager and search for libwxbase2.8,
mark it for removal and apply, synaptic will tell you this will remove libwxbase2.8 ,libwxgtk2.8,opencpn and in my case filezilla. no problem just remeber the programs you remove and install them later.

3 install the two files you have downloaded using GDebi package installer, you will get a warning about a newer version but go on

4 install opencpn again and sound should work!

Regards Johan

jlsail
Good advices

tiberius64
Your problem is that you actually have the standard Ubuntu packages installed. Please follow the instructions to install packages from
apt.wxwidgets.org/.

If you are using Synaptic mark "Lock Version" in "Packages" to prevent that the downloaded packages gets replaced by the Ubuntu packages.
Do this for all packages that you download from wxwidgets.org.

Opencpn Sound problem Linux Mint 13 and Ubuntu 12.04

SUCCESS for Ubuntu 12.04

Hi cagney and jlsail,

thank you very much for your exact and prompt advice - now also I was able to get the sound running. I also locked the versions I downloaded before.

Thanks again, now I will use this system on the sea, especially for the anchor alarm and hope to sleep well without getting the alarm.
