Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Absolutely correct, there have been sold already more tablets than PC's last quarter as told by the market reviewers.

However OpenCPN depends on the wxWidgets libraries which are not available for each operating system. Useful tools like the GPS daemon gpsd are not even available for Windows. The gpsd homepage ( GPSd — Put your GPS on the net! ) say: "No, we don't support Windows — get a better operating system."

So it will take some time until the free developers changes their mind.
Also who should pay for all the investments to bring a free app into the app shops of Android or Apple iOS?

Commercial developers needs to sell their products and are therefore faster to respond to the growing tablet market.

Did anyone see the ipad 2 announcement?

This is the killer device....please please *PLEASE* try and shift resources to develop an iOS or Android version of OpenCPN.

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

A lot of people are asking for OpenCPN on IOS and Android. I do think this will eventually happen. However, don't hold your breath. OpenCPN is written in c++ using the wxWidgets gui toolkit.

wxAndroid doesn't exist ("yet") and neither is Android exactly friendly to c++ (also "yet"). So, those are our 2 obstacles to greatly simplify a port to Android. Here is an encouraging article on wxBlog: Do Androids dream of wxWindows

As for IOS, I imagine the situation is similar. However, I'm not a member of the Mac cult ("yet?") so I cannot comment ... yet another yet.

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Correct, it will be rather difficult to get an Android version of OpenCPN.
The situation for iPad with its iOS operating system is slightly better because there exists a wxWidgets version for. Once the wxWidgets Code in OpenCPN is updated for a stable Mac OS X version, the next step for an iPad version will be not far away. But it will takes time...

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Is there any update to this? Open cpn for iphone / ipad is something I'd quite happily pay to see. Is there anyone out there working on this? I've love to help out with funding if there's a link someone could point me to?

Regards,
Simon

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Simon,

there is nothing to see. OpenCPN has to work with wxWidgets version 2.9 to be able to run on iPad or iPhone but still the developers work with wxWidgets version 2.8.12.
There is no other workaround as I pointed in posting

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

That's sad to see. I'll email them directly and see what their plans are.
Hopefully they update soon and an iPad and iPhone version will see the light of day soon.

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Simon...
We will most likely not upgrade to wx 2.9 until it is released as stable 3.0, because until then it will not be available in most of Linux distribution's repositories and thus useless to 99% of our normal users there.
Even if/after we do, it will be A LOT of work to port to iOS - (at least) most of the GUI would have to be rewritten as wxIOS is not a full flavored wx port, but an (currently incomplete and not tested) implementation of the wxMobile API.

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Simon,

meanwhile you may use PolarView MX. It is for free from iTunes Store but has less functionality than OpenCPN. However it supports vector and raster charts as well as quilting.

BTW at least in my country there are not 99% OpenCPN users with Linux. It's about 1% and the rest are Windows users.

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Gerhard...
Maybe my wording was not exact enough. What I said is that 99% of our Linux users is not able/willing to install packages not available in the distribution repositories. BTW, could I ask where your numbers come from? Looking at Download Statistics: All Files the proportion of the platforms is a bit different...

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

CarCode....

Although we could relatively easily do it, I don't see any advantage at all to porting OpenCPN to Wx2.9 for Windows users. Am I missing something?

Seems to me that the only winners for 2.9 would be some Mac64 users.
I would be happy to support a modification to the build process to enable 2.9 for wxMac, with wx2.9 libraries embedded in the dmg.
Bring on some code....

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Take a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 with OpenPlotter software. Works as an WIFI access point and as an VNC server.

Take VNC client on your I-thing or whatever and you get the OpenCPN from the Raspberry Desktop. Including GPS and AIS. It also acts as a multiplexer.

That is nothing special for Raspberry. It was shown already 6 years ago that it works this way. See posting #36 http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tml#post576174

Re: OpenCPN on an iPad ?

Gerard,

it is realy nothing new. But it is an very easy way to get OpenCPN with GPS and AIS and SignalK on an Ipad or other system. Works even on a smartphone.
