OpenCPN Newbie

Hi all,am new on the forum,been sailing 15 years Israel,Turkey,greece and egypt.Also crossed the Atlantic.Have now got a laptop,installed CPN and want to attach it to my GPS 72.Would appreciate help,either at mistra@bezeqint.net or skype mistralii

Ahh, welcome fellow sailor and message board attendee.

I too have OPENCPN installed on my Compaq laptop(s) and attach my GPS receiver to the USB port where it interfaces easily with the program. Configure the port if it doesn't automatically detect it and go from there. They've made some updates to the program so download the latest version to be current.
It's incredible what the team has done... and all without the help of microsoft... LoL
most of the team is on here as well and can help much more than I can.

mine has the USB cable

I have two different units. The favorite is the Garmin Ledgend handheld unit and it has a cable available that supplies power as well as the NMEA data transfer. Look online at www.thegpsstore.com and see if they have a cable for yours.
It'll come with a CD for the drivers and then you're off and tracking.

Thanks tried the shop,but no help,all the have is the open wire data transfer which I have and is at present attached to my DSC radio to give a position. I thought that this could also go via the usb to the laptop,but it didn,t work.Saw do transfer thing with cd attached. thanks anyway for trying to help
