OpenCPN / Google Earth Combination

Here's a handy OpenCPN - GE combination straight from Windows..

1.Start OpenCPN and put a marker where you want to go.
2.Click on the marker and read the geo loc in the Mark/WP Properties
3.Start GE and enter the markers geo loc.
4.Hold down CTRL and press the minimized OpenCPN button until it goes black.
5.Right click on either minimized button and select 'Show windows side by side'

You now have two identical, independent windows at the same world location.
The windows are not synchronized so you have to zoom in and out independently.

If you wish to save your GE view for a later occation,I recommend using this great little program which creates KML files which you can later execute with a click. (replaces steps 2-3. above) Just copy the geo locs you entered in GE or from the OpenCPN marker.

Hello Sinbad, if you can split up your GPS signal you can get this whilst moving also, I beleive google earth allows you to select a GPS input these days

Here's a few typical KML files created with Andrew's utility :

The example shown also has range, tilt and heading.

Sounds like a great combination.. I downloaded the MMG utility but I must confess I am a little lost as to how to set it up in OpenCpn-Google Earth. I am using Virtual Serial Ports from Etherlogic by the way and also normally virtual COM:7 for my incoming AIS source.

Perhaps somebody can give me an orientation. Presently no GPS. (armchair sailor)

You can directly edit the kml file in notepad if you like...degrees are decimal,South and West are "negative sign".Also, you can set altitude(metres) tilt, etc etc.

The lower position makes a place mark.If you don't want one, just leave it 0 and 0 or do nothing in the original so it shows up somewhere else!

Re: OpenCPN / Google Earth Combination

Can anybody help making a cmd line to execute the following:

1. Start OpenCPN
2. Start KML Creator from the website: Create Google Earth KML Files - Convert Latitude/Longitude to KML - AndrewDavidson.com
3. Create duplicate screens
4. Wait for input from OpenCPN (manually)
5. Start a .kml file from local directory

Tore

P.S. Would be ideal to place a waypoint marker in OpenCPN at the location desired and have it's geo loc passed automatically to KML Creator for the creation of the .kml file which could then execute automatically.
