Re: OpenCPN General

On my last trip I run into serious gps accuracy problems/dropouts when using opencpn on a galaxy tab A. Meanwhile my Lowrance plotter worked like charm...

Any ideas, what could cause this?

Everything on the latest stable version. Last year I haven't seen anything similar, now this is even a milder dropout, in some situations the boat "jumped off" the track for 5-10 minutes, sailing on land!

Is it possible, that the oreo/android update is the culprit?

Re: OpenCPN General

I'll try flight mode, maybe the gsm location was the problem (last year I didn't have a SIM in the tablet)

Very likely will be a slow response, will take a couple of weeks until my next trip.

Question Re: OpenCPN charts australia

i have used opencpn on windows laptop with success, and gps dongle. now i am looking at buying a tablet - i'm still trying to work out which one, and the threads on here have me leaning toward windows op system and maybe a samsung tablet with a built in gps. but i'm trying to workout what size hard drive i need. on the laptop i have cm charts in a folder with about 00 folders at 1.3gb. but this is the whole world i think. i just want australia for now. i have looked on the cpn manual and it lists loads of free chart downloads but i can't see any for australia. can anyone point me in the right direction please. and if you want to make any comments about things to look for on the tablet feel free as ive never used one and it all seems a bit foreign at this stage. we don't have our plotter connected to radar and we don't have ais, so i don't think we need to worry about that at this stage either, just charts to navigate by. thankyou

Re: OpenCPN General

There are no free charts for Australia.
But you can license the oeEVC (oeSENC) vector charts for Australia for a modest cost.

Those have the same content and coverage as the S-63 vector charts from AHS.

You get them at o-charts.org.

And here an article, that explains background and usage of this type or charts:

No good free Australian charts but oeSENC are excellent value at €35) ($AU60 ish)

They take up about 850MB of storage

Re: OpenCPN General

Thankyou both for your replies - the link and the size info - I need that to help me work out how much storage I’ll need on tablet. Now I just need to work our ram minimum and I think I’m sorted. Cheers

Re: OpenCPN General

If you are considering a tablet, Samsung or Windows, try to verify if there is a genuine gps chip in the machine. Historically Samsung has been very good about this (starting with Sirf) but recently I have noticed that they do not list the gps chip manufacturer which makes me somewhat suspect of the device for navigation. I have not researched this completely however, and I hope Samsung has not changed their standards with regard to GPS, which has been very good for our older units.

Quite obviously there is a big difference between in position/location via triangulation with cell towers and using GPS!

Re: OpenCPN General

Ok, got an item for some "discussion" . . . I'm using a Verizon Hotspot (Mifi16620L) and, since I can't connect the Vesper 8000 to my MS Surface laptop for input, was wondering if I can connect the hotspot to my Surface (via a Targus docking station USB port) to receive GPS info . . . any thoughts? This info would then feed into the OpenCPN charts . right?

Good question, actually. I read on here where only one source of data can go out from the Vesper and that is feeding my Garmin 1042XSV . . . from your statement, I'm guessing that isn't the case . . . so I can do the mini-C into the Vesper and USB to the Surface laptop?
