Opencpn for Android?
I tried to download the free Opencpn for android app via Google play, but nothing happens. The Samsung 5s android phone claims the app is installed, but I can't locate an icon to open it. Then I read some feedback on the play site claiming the app either doesn't work or is fake. The Opencpn.org site wasn't much help either.
Can anyone please tell me if there is a working Opencpn android app currently available, how to download onto a Samsung phone, and how well does it work? Along with three iPads and an iPhone 6 running Inavx quite successfully. I'd like to put this unlocked Samsung phone to work so my wife can use it in Italy and it can also be used for navigation.
Thank you
Ken

Re: Opencpn for Android???
Coincidentally did the same yesterday. It works on my Samsung core prime.
Does not place and icon on the home screens however. So need to browse the phone's files to find it. A icon can be placed on the home screen by the user. The charts folder can be be a little tricky to find as well. Must know the location path and browse for it as well.
Would be happy to help with more specific suggestions.

Michael,
How did you download it and eventually locate the app on your phone? My phone indicates that the app was downloaded, but I can't find it. I'm much more familiar with iPhones, and not so much with Samsung even though I used the Samsung for two years.
Also, two Opencpn apps were listed on Google play, the free app and the $9.95 version/offering, which one did you download? I downloaded the free version.
One of the reasons I switched back to apple.

Re: Opencpn for Android???
Ken,
I run the paid ($9.95) version of OpenCPN on an Android tablet (Dragon Touch M7) with a built in GPS. This is version 1.08 from Dave. I installed it from Google Play. It works well with the program installed in the internal memory and charts on a micro SD card.

Re: Opencpn for Android???
Free version on mine.
Android ver. 4.4.4 , I'm guessing you have a newer version of android. Mine has an app's folder on the home screen by default, which I believe is permanent. You should have an app's folder somewhere.

Re: Opencpn for Android???
Thanks for all the great info so far. How much is a set of charts? I already purchased a set of vector charts for the iPhone. Will my transverse account allow the second download onto android?
I have a 32gb micro SD card installed in the galaxy phone.

Re: Opencpn for Android???
Assuming charts for the Med, of course free NOAA for US.
Are you're Med charts a proprietary file format?
If they are a standard raster or vector format you should be able to manually transfer the files to the Samsung.

The simplest way to get OpenCpn working on a Samsung S3 or tablet is to download/install the free app from the play store. The free one works fine...
Plug the S3 into a laptop, and navigate on the phone memory to :
android/data//org.opencpn.opencpn_free/files. here create a folder called CM93 or whatever.
Dump all your charts into this folder.
Disconnect the phone, tablet, click opencpn, click the CM93 or whatever. to tell Opencpn where the charts are located.
That's it , simple as.. And it works perfectly..

If we keep answering this New Posts in this forum, there will be no support for the special OpenCPN Android Forum !!!
So my suggestion is not to answer these questions here. Make them re-post in the proper forum.. Thanks.
