OpenCPN - Fedora 14 - GPSD

Hello,

I'm having a fit trying to get Version 2.3.1 Build 2010-12-28 to talk to my Zenstar III USB GPS via GPSD 2.95 under Fedora 14. I have OpenCPN configured for Network GPSD, NMEA Baud Rate 4800. I get nothing in the Data Stream Window. It will not work when configured for /dev/ttyUSB0 either. Looking at the gpsd site, it indicates that there have been some significant changes. Maybe it's gpsd and/or libgps causing problems. Does anyone have insight to this issue?

With gpsd 2.95 and the latest OpenCPN you should use "Network LIBGPS" as NMEA data source, not Network GPSD.
Read Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage for more instructions.

To use /dev/ttyUSB0 as source, make sure gpsd is not running.

Thanks fo the reply. Is this how you configured your installation? Unfortunately, for some reason, with my 2.3.1, I do not have Network LIBGPS shown as a choice for GPS configuration. As for why, I don't know. As a fallback, I backed off to Fedora 13 and everything works well. I have a second laptop to troubleshoot the Fedora 14 issue.

I am having problems also with opencpn both 231 and the previous
version on fc14. In another thread I posted that my garmin
oregon 400c is communicating via gpsd and tested with xgps,
cpgs. Also in that thread I think it was stated that the message
window may not work. I have posted a jpg of the error msg
about a libgps mismatch. Not surprising to me also there are a few
occasions that my gps doesn't seem to be working with gpsd and
I end up having to reboot to get it working again. I tested a few
other application like gpsdrive and viking which don't appear
to have the problem so I think something needs to be tweaked in
opencpn. I would certainly be willing to do more testing but not
sure how to proceed.

I'm on Ubuntu and a bit rusty on Fedora.
Do you have the libgps package installed?
If you compile yourself, you need liggps-devel as well.
Seems like your gps has a Sirf chip, which has a few gpsd issues.
Reed Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage The instructions for BU353 should work for you as well as both uses a Sirf chip.
When connecting to gpsd, the gps is switched to Sirf mode. If you would like to try a direct connection, make sure to reset the gps to NMEA mode.

Thanks for the clarification. As I suspected, Network LIBGPS was missing for a reason. I downloaded the source and discovered that it is a compile time option. Obviously, the 2.3.1 RPM is built without it.

I built/installed an RPM for the earlier OpenCPN Beta release for Fedora 13 a few months ago, and I may take a crack at that again. For the time being, I have a working system. I'm off for the Fort Lauderdale to Key West race on Wednesday. Next week will be the soonest I can look at this further.

Michael, you're right, I build the rpm without that option as I don't use it myself... Thomas, should I enable it for the default rpm?

I updated Compiling - Linux | Official OpenCPN Homepage a few weeks ago, it should be easy to build your own on Fedora. Feel free to contact me if you've any question.

Yes, please rebuild with libgps enabled. That way users can choose for themselves if they want gpsd or a direct connection.

I have re-built it after installing the gpsd-devel package and this now gives me the Network LIBGPS option. This works fine upon starting OpenCPN after a re-boot with gpsd enabled. However, if I quit OpenCPN and then restart, GPS is not working (the status icon is red). Restarting gpsd does not clear the problem, & both xgps & cgps still work OK.

I cant get opencpn to use libgps when it is selected. and sometimes I cant get opencpn to use /dev/ttyusb0 either


sometimes when I do cat /dev/ttyUSB0, I get nothing back, sometimes I do get data. xgps was working the whole time I was trying to get opencpn working.
xgps works most of the time. For me, gpsd has to be configured to use a set port , I could get that to work with running the dpkg reconfigure and setting the port to /dev/ttyUSB0

that ttyUSB0 port also may change to ttyUSB1 and I thought gpsd could cope with that change.
