OpenCPN don't install on Ubuntu 17.10

Hi all

I am trying to install O on my new Ubuntu 17.10 and can't
I get this message :

sudo apt-get install opencpn

Thanks for your help

JP

Those messages (in french) would indicate that you need to add the OpenCPN PPA to your Ubuntu installation - this is an Ubuntu configuration issue.
This is covered here in the OpenCPN user manual:

How to add the OpenCPN PPA into an Ubuntu system

Re: OpenCPN don't install on Ubuntu 17.10

Thanks Yalla

But I HAVE added the PPA ...
I followed the manual several times ... always the same result

the last sentence :
E: Le paquet « opencpn » n'a pas de version susceptible d'être installée
means "the <<opencpn>> package has no installable version"

Re: OpenCPN don't install on Ubuntu 17.10

We just recently tried to install a newer version on a Rpi through the PPA and got an error message/wouldn't install due to it being unsigned. (Tried several times)

We did get it to load properly by typing in the source code.

@Ptizef

Hmm ... you're not the first to get on this problem. I have already seen posts on H & O that indicated that it did not work with these versions of Linux.

I feel that currently, efforts are directed towards the use of Rasberry and OpenPlotter. This is part of OCPN's development wanderings.

Re: OpenCPN don't install on Ubuntu 17.10

Generally speaking, OpenCPN works best on LTS (long term support) releases of Linux. If you want to run on very recent Linux releases then you might have to fight through all the newest features of the kernel and the window manager plus the OpenGL implementation. Not to mention the PPA manipluations.

There often is no good reason to jump to a very recent build of Linux for a navigation computer. The LTS releases will still get security fixes and the underpinnings are much more stable than the latest builds.

Standard things to try when graphics problems arise is to turn off (or on) OpenGL graphic acceleration. Also, clear out the graphics cache and fully rebuild the chart database. But sometimes the latest release of Linux just has bugs.

I agree with T/Dans last post.
I have in the past tried to use "O" with latest releases of Ubuntu and found unacceptable for reliable navigation.

Ubuntu 16.04 has been rock solid reliability wise, but still has a few issues with the unity desktop manager.
These issues are only cosmetic and easy to work around.

You will see from Dave's responses this is not "O's" failing, and fingers crossed changes in the wind for Ubuntu users.

What I try to do now, is when I upgrade my home computer to the next version of Ubuntu, first thing I do is test "O" for functionality for some time before upgrading navigation computer. I still have to keep this computer reliable for business purposes.
Stick with Ubuntu but stay with the LTS version for primary navigation.

Of course if you have the luxury of a spare computer, you could always install latest version on it and report problems here as others do!

Re: OpenCPN don't install on Ubuntu 17.10

I run the latest Ubuntu in a virtual machine for testing. It isn't perfect but it helps in debugging some things. It's not a terrible idea to run a virtual machine for the primary navigation functions. It's fairly easy if getting and sending nav data over Ethernet. But even serial ports can be virtualized.
