Gilletarom...

Will you post a link to the GRIB file, or the GRIB request info?

Thanks
Dave

Problem well understood now and fix trivial.

Hi Pavel, just, as I read in a later post from you, that obviously the source master has this problem fixed already, is there any way for me to get this fix implemented as well?? Testing is a bit cumbersome with the long start time.

Thanks and best regards, Uwe

Uwe...
If you can't build from source, you will have to wait for the next beta.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2222 Released

Gilletarom...

re:
"I made another test with O332222, VMH charts and GRIB plugin. "

I have been exploring this situation with the EeePC (1GB, intel 3150 GMA OpenGL)

I find that for my hardware, I cannot display overlays in GRIB because the OpenGL driver for GMA 3150 only supports OpenGL V1.4.

So, I am left with non-OpenGL mode if I want overlays.

Without overlays, it seems OK, all things considered. It does respond, as long as the scale selected is large enough. Small scale (zoom out) displays are much more difficult to render, and performance suffers.

But I think at some point we must agree that the datasets overwhelm the hardware. On my Win7 starter, the base memory usage (without any applications running) is about 500 MB. (by the way, this ought to be an embarrassment to Microsoft...) This leaves about 500 MB for OCPN. This is enough if using OpenGL with texture caching, or vector charts. But not really enough if we need to process a 1 GB GRIB file on top.

Are you able to use OpenGL with GRIB overlays? What about particles?

Any other netbook (or other low performance platforms) users with test reports to contribute?

What do you think?

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2222 Released

Hi Dave, Gerard (Gilletarom)

I tried this file of about 2 Mo.
I haven't got VMH charts so I tested only with CM93 and rasters
It makes no clear difference between the two chart types ( at big scale, rasters are not displayed, only their boundary are visible )
May be VMH charts have a negative performance impact ?
I had the better result with OpenGL on and catching for rasters
At big scale (zoom in) it's slow, but still usable. Panning and zooming are halting but working.
When zooming in, it become faster
I can use overlays which slow down a bit, but not much. The most demanding with this big files at large scale is barbed arrows and isobars concentration. ( for example an offset of 1 mb instead of 4 mb will decrease performances. )
I tried the same file on my middle range Vista and without surprise, it's much better.
Just a remark about loading time : It's long, but I found it a little faster than zyGrib. (the progress dialog help to wait ... )

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2222 Released

Using compile of 3.3.2222 with git pull from today, tried Grib file with CAPE and Particles with Intel i7 2720Q 2.20ghz with 8gb. 64bit Win7
Have created avi file of small area about 38mb, will try to upload and also attach the grb file. - It may be a little nutty to try this, but it is an experiment.

Running this grib with particles the Computer got much warmer and there was heavy processing, ...looks pretty good though. The CamSTudio 2.7 Screen Video Capture used to record screen made it jumpier, it is actually quite smooth. I had to restrict the screen region quite a lot to reduce the size of the avi file, as a result you do not see the full effect. This file has taken about 15 min to upload.

I agree that Particles would tend to overwhelm a low power computer however Sean was running it on one of his laptops I believe. I hope you can figure out a way of throttling or cutting back on the data processed, maybe with a slider control, by using fewer frames or something, or perhaps just turning it off with a notice.

Please remove the mpg off the grib file.

Grib did not upload. Find it at Opencpn Beta File thingie for Windows
rguser rgpass file named rgleason_20141101_210531.grb.bz2

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.3.2222 Released

Jean Pierre,
I tried turning off overlay on "Wind Gust" in the above file, thinking I would be able to display Wind, Wind Gust (with only value and isobar) and Pressure with any one data_type that has Overlay's checked.

The plugin disabled Wind Gust (had no check for "overlay") when I selected selected "Clouds" (which has overlay checked).

Is that really the way you want it to work? Why not allow additional data to display, provided there is only one data_type with overlay checked that is turned on to display?

Dave, Gerard

Continuing big file test

I tested the same file on my middle range Vista along with Ubuntu 14.04 in dual boot
result : windows 0 - Linux 1
Better with Linux

May be there is something wrong but it is possible to show all data at the same time assuming there is only one instance of the same display
In the shot attached, you can see at the same time
- wind with barbed arrows + particles
- waves with direction arrows
- wind gust with numbers
- CAPE with coloured overlay

Is this not what was expected ?

Jean Pierre, First I'd like to say this has turned into a great plugin with you and Sean honing it and refining things. Thank you!

See the notes above. I had wind, pressure, waves, wind gust (as isobars or arrows with no overlay and no numbers) Then Cape with colored overlay (can have numbers but did not use it).

When I check wind the particles start running. When uncheck particles stop.

When I check wind the waves get unchecked even when I have them as just arrows with no overlay and no numbers. And visa versa.

If I check Pressure, then Wind Gust is unchecked and visa versa. Have them as just isobars and arrows with no numbers.

All the above is independent of CAPE which remains checked and is an overlay or overlay with numbers.

One of the keys was figuring out that you cannot check numbers on any of the first 4 data_types.

I hope this helps. (I would probably make the programming as simple as possible, allowing the user to clog up his display with data by checking the box, provided overlays were turned off, ..and only allow one overlay data_type to display at a time. However I am not aware of your concerns.) Rick
