Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.1206 Released

Hello S/Y Gilana,

Encountered the same issue and spent hours trying to isolate, turned out, for us anyway, that OpenCPN was not the issue. SSD becoming corrupted was. For us removed SSD and reinstalled all software and lo and behold have had a stable system for over 6 months now, we reboot only after update Tuesdays.

ASUS G73jh
8GB RAM
Win 7 64
VMWare for OpenCPN but on host as well
Was a 256GB Kingston SSD

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.1206 Released

Not 100% specific to this release but the comments by others of the slick and improved performance when zooming charts prompts me to write.

I find that there is massive decrease in responsiveness of OCPN when you have more than just a few tracks loaded. I also have some layers with a lot of data, one has 800 (ish) items in it, all rocks, kelp patchs and other features around that South Georgia that are not charted. When I have that layer and some decent tracks loaded OCPN almost grinds to a halt.

The layers seem to have more effect than tracks.

The tracks or layers don't have to be located on the visible chart area, they have the same effect whether in view or not.

I'm usually running OCPN on a fairly powerful laptop Dell XPS15 running windows 7.

I have the same layer and track info available for use in OziExplorer and do not see a similar performance decrease.

Any ideas on configuration settings that might help? or are the large files causing an issue with memory management within OCPN that needs to be addressed?

Littlechay....

If you can post your navobj.xml file, we will take a look at the performance degradation. Probably nothing one can do with OCPN 3.0.2, but we should be able to improve it for 3.2.x

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

It seems I have five navobj.xml files at the moment navobj.xml.1 etc.. the navobj.xml file and ones numbered 1 to 4 are small 1k and number five is circa 18MBytes.

Which do you want? And how do I send it... I don't want to post the actual layer contents here because the data is definitely not public. If you email me christopherjamesharris (at) gmail I can send it privately.

I only have the layers loaded at the moment and when viewing the area of South Georgia where the layers are on screen OCPN is unusable. Can't drag the chart, definitely can't zoom with the mouse wheel as the lag is too great, Screen redraw seems to stop and doesn't refresh at all after a couple of operations.

Re: OpenCPN Beta Version 3.1.1206 Released

Dave:
Thanks for fixing many bug issues on Mac. My X86_64 version now compiles and links with no problems.
At runtime O crashes after the splash screen when trying to load the plugin dashboard. If I remove it O runs fine and is nice and stable and a lot faster than the i386 version.
There is only one issue thats rather annoying, when you open the preferences all the free text is missing, only the icons, selection windows and graphics show up show you have to guess what to do.

I used gdb to try and figure out what the crashing problem is with the dashboard plugin and found that in buffer.h line #198 caused crashed with Sigabrt. Gdb says the error is caused by: "pointer being freed was not allocated"
Any ideas whats going on. Here are some screen shots.

Thanks,
Freddie

sbfreddie....

Lets take a step back, please.

Does the 32bit .DMG from opencpn.org downloads page run, and run correctly as far as you may have tested it?

Gilletarom...

The problem with Special Purpose Buoys is a missing symbol in chartsymbols.xml for simplified chart rendering.
I'm not sure what the correct simplified symbol for a generic BOYSPP is. I have attached a screenshot. Does this look right?

I do not know what is the correct symbol required by regulation internationnale. I tried to find the answer.

In the meantime, what you suggested is better than nothing.

I will post again on this subject.

First I change of chart. Now I use NOAA ENC S 57. So I can compare what OpenCPN display and what PolarWiews display.

Sorry compared with competitor software, but ...
Obviously, there is no evidence that these buoys correctly displayed by PW

Here screen copy with PW

- You can see how the 3 yellow special purpose are displayed
- the safe water is displayed with a red and white circle because the buoy is red and white.

Regarding the symbol for the special buoy there is the following publication
IHO PUBLICATION S-52 APPENDIX 2
ADDENDUM TO ANNEX A, PART I, USERS´ MANUAL
EDITION 3.4 (2008)
PAPER BASED DESCRIPTION OF SYMBOLS
FOR USE ON ECDIS
(no idea if this is the latest one)
I found here:
ECDIS Regulations and Publications at ECDISregs.com

that defines:

BCN :
I do not found other documentation. So I thing that you have see the last version.

Dave :
For the safe water, do not change anything ( your symbol completly red is Ok).
For the special purpose buoy, you are Ok. (BCN is also Ok).
For other special buoy see screen copy

Dave & rooidirk

Kubuntu 1204 on Amd64.
I tried a few different fonts and sizes and had no problems.
The issue may be connected to some particular, misbehaving font?

Dave:
No, OpenCPN 3.1.1206 freezes as soon as you click on the OK button in the "No Charts Installed" startup window.
This is on Mac OS Lion (10.7.5).

I have attached two screenshots, one of the window shown when it freezes and the other the crash report after forced quit of OpenCPN.

It does the exact same thing on my 2007 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I have attached the crash report after forced quit on Snow Leopard also.

Thanks,
Freddie
