Re: OpenCPN Beta 5.5.1118 Released

Hi Dave,

I'm on raspberry pi os bullseye, which I tried to install with the normal ppa manual for a raspberry pi 3. It only works when I use the focal release, because of dependencies.
When I use that, I get this version of OpenCPN, which I'm perfectly happy to use, but I can't seem to be able to get plugins. Not with the Master catalog, nor with the Beta catalog. I tried to search how to add those, but I still have no clue. Is there a way to get these plugins?

Thanks in advance,
-Hans

Hans...
Hakan posts the correct information.

Bullseye is not yet supported for OpenCPN plugins. Work on that will begin when OCPN 5.6 releases.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Beta 5.5.1118 Released

Hello Dave,

I am trying to install OpenCPN on a new Raspberry Pi 4 8 GB running Buster.

I tried installing using the OpenCPN instruction for RPI:
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...spberrypi_rpi2

This picks up the latest release candidate from launchpad repository. This installs fine, but when I start it, I get an OpenCPN window which is just black. The only thing displayed is "COG" and "SOG" in the status bar.

I tried installing through OpenPlotter, which gives the same results. Which is to be expected, as it installs exactly the same package through APT.

Next I tried compiling OpenCPN tag 5.2.4 from source, and that runs, although somewhat unstable (some segmentation faults), and the plugins don't seem to be working. So I would rather go the official build route...

Any idea what is going wrong with the RC build? How can I help you to figure out what is wrong? Also, is it possible to get the stable 5.2.4 version through launchpad repository? It seems that only the RC is there, but I might be missing something.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Lukas

P.S. I do have some experience running OpenCPN on Windows, and quite a bit of Linux experience. But OpenCPN on the RPi is new to me.

Lujas76...

As an experiment, if possible, you may like to burn a fresh image of OpenPlotter, which currently uses Buster and OCPN 5.2.4. Get this running cleanly, then use the OpenPlotter OCPN Installer to upgrade OCPN to the current repo version. We can follow along the steps, if you like.

Ooops, i now see that you did that. How well did 5.2.4 run in the OpenPlotter environment?
Also, a screen shot would be useful.

Welcome aboard
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Beta 5.5.1118 Released

Hello Dave,

Thanks for your response. I didn't quite check that, as I used the OpenPlotter "advanced" install:
https://openplotter.readthedocs.io/e....html#advanced

This only gave me the option to download the RC version of OpenCPN, not 5.2.4.

I like your suggestion, trying the OpenPlotter image, checking if that works with 5.2.4 and then upgrade. Only thing is that I want to keep my current image, so either need to back up or buy a new card.

I'll get back to you on this, but it might take a bit of time.

Thanks,
Lukas

Hello Dave,

As suggested above, I installed the "OpenPlotter Starting" image, and tried running that. The OpenCPN 5.2.4 that is comes with runs fine. I then upgraded using OpenCPN Installer to 5.5.1130, and that runs fine as well!

So I went back to me old OS image, updated Opencpn to 5.5.1130, and I still had the same problem. A screenshot is attached.

So I looked at the config differences between the working version (from the OpenPlotter image) and my non working version.

It looks like there is some problem around the opencpn.conf file in the .opencpn directory. This does not exist in the broken version. But if I copy that file (from the working version) into the .opencpn directory, OpenCPN runs fine.

This is easily reproduced for me. Remove the .opencpn directory, it is broken again (and there is no opencpn.conf file in the .opencpn directory). Copy in opencpn.conf from a working installation, and it works fine.

So maybe something is goes wrong setting up the initial configuration? I guess people who update from a working 5.2.4 would not see this problem.

Let me know if I can get you any more information on this.

Regards,
Lukas

Lukas...
Trying to replicate your experiment.
1. What exactly is "me old OS image," (sic).?
2. From the screenshot, it looks like OCPN is actually running. If you close OCPN (Close button, upper right), then a newly created opencpd.conf file should be flushed to disk. We then want to compare that new opencpn.conf with a version from OpenPlotter that is known to work.

Thanks
Dave

Lukas...
No luck reproducing this problem.

1. What exactly is "me old OS image," (sic).?
What I mean here is, exactly how did you create the "Buster" image for this initial SDCard boot?

2. Is your Buster image 64 bits, or 32 bits?

What I did:
1. Download legacy Buster armhf (32 bit) image.
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/ra...ster-armhf.zip
2. Burn the card with "rpi-imager"
3. Boot rPI.
4. Download latest OCPN build for Bionic/armhf
https://launchpad.net/~opencpn/+arch...04.1_armhf.deb

5. $ sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/*.deb
6. $ sudo apt install -f
7. $ opencpn

And OCPN started as normal, showing GSHHS charts.

How does this compare with your steps?
Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN Beta 5.5.1118 Released

Hello Dave,

I tried reproducing what I originally did, but it now works fine. So every new setup I have tried this weekend works fine. So no need to look into this further, I have wasted enough of your time. Apologies for that.

My answers to your questions and details of what I did are below, but feel free to ignore them.

Kind regards,
Lukas

================================================== ==
In the screenshot OpenCPN is indeed running. But when I try to close it with the close button, nothing happens. If I try again, I get a "not responding" message (screenshot attached). If I proceed, the process get's killed. No opencpn.conf file is produced. See the console screenshot for details. It also shows I am running the armv7l version, which is 32 bit.

I followed your instructions above, and indeed OpenCPN opens up fine.

I reproduced my original setup today with the following steps. This now produces a working OpenCPN:
1. Use this image (the last 32 bit buster image I could find a week ago):
https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/ra...ster-armhf.zip

2. Burn the card with "rpi-imager"

3. Boot rPI. During first setup, I choose the following:
a. Country = Netherlands (which selects Dutch and Amsterdam), and ticked "Use English language" and "Use US keyboard".
b. Set a new password for user "pi"
c. Selected "This screen shows a black border around the dekstop"
d. Selected my Wifi network and provided password.
e. I let it update software (this takes some time)
f. Let it reboot the pi

4. I then followed the installation instructions from:
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...spberrypi_rpi2
a. Add the following to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb Index of /opencpn/opencpn/ubuntu bionic main
b. sudo apt install dirmngr
c. sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys C865EB40
d. sudo apt-get update
e. sudo apt-get install opencpn

5. Run with:
opencpn

As mentioned, OpenCPN opens up fine. I am not sure what has changed from my previous setup.

Lukas76...

So, a glitch of some kind, for sure. Grrr...
I will try again with the image file you quoted. I expect no trouble, just as you report.

Thanks for sticking with me
