OpenCPN and Windows 8

Anybody know whether OpenCPN will work with Win8? Moreover, if so, any thoughts on interfacing with simple, PC-dedicated GPS units?
Thanx,
Tim

Re: OpenCPN and Windows 8

All we had so far is one report saying it worked but OpenGL mode was problematic.
Theoretically everything that works on Win7 should work, MS has always been keen on good backward compatibility. But driver issues in the beginning would not be surprising.

Re: OpenCPN and Windows 8

I was going to open a new thread to warn people about Windows 8 (Win8) but then I saw yours.

It has to be the biggest blunder that Microsoft has made since Vista. I happened to have got a fairly early version but not a pre-release. Actually I think its bigger.

OpenCPN does work on it but...

First I found you have to completely relearn how to do anything from starting the File Explorer to how to shut it down. But you eventually learn and think its not too bad.

But then you try to connect your GPS and serial to USB adapters and find they don't work. You then desperately search for new drivers only to find, THEY DON'T EXIST. So I had to buy new serial to USB adapters and also a new GPS BU-353S4 the old ones don't work. BTW some of this is also true if you have Win7 64, the adapters work but not the old BU-353 GPS.

Also, because it has IE version 10, you will find that all lot of sites don't completely support it like this CruisersForum doesn't allow you to upload with IE 10. My bank program doesn't work completely either. I have to use Firefox for these things.

I tried to to fall back to Win7 but that is not possible without a complete reinstall of all your software. I may do it anyway.

So be warned, is you go to Windows 8 check everything before you go sailing to be sure it works.

I fully agree, also the USB port will not power down when you shut down the computer.
To cure all this there is a program Start8 that give you back the start button and the W7 look.
Driver problems will be there because you are still running W8.
My Holux GR-213 GPS will not run in W8. The chip version is outdated and there will not be a new driver for W8
Have to buy a new one, don't know which one yet. Any suggestions?

Re: OpenCPN and Windows 8

Actually I thought Win7 was the best version ever, at least the 32 bit version.

The 64 bit version does have the problem that my old serial port adapters didn't work but the old GPS BU353 does work. I guess you can't completely blame Microsoft for the old serial port drivers not working the manufactures of those devices just have not created new drivers for them that work on the 64 bit version.

As phiggins stated already, a GPS BU-353S4 works with Win8 and the latest driver . I think the GPS pucks are made by Globalsat.
I further heard from a navigation software supplier that the old driver works well under Win8, one just has to make sure it is not updated via Windows.
Paul, did you test your existing gps and usb/serial adapters also with the old or only with the latest driver?

I did try some old drivers but I have so many of those little driver diskettes I'm not sure I got the correct one for the serial adapters. I didn't try the old driver for the BU353. I figured the new driver would support it.

Re: OpenCPN and Windows 8

HI,

Got OpenCPN working under Windows 8 (32 Bits - 2Gb RAM - 32 Gb HardDrive -SSD).

The GPS BU-353 problem has been solved by using an old drivers (thanks to Zoef's information).

Need to put the machine under supervision during several hours to see if every thing is OK.

Thanks for all.

What USGlobalsat means is that they don't have a Win8 driver they support. Doesn't mean the GPS can't be made to work.

Alexang...
"unable to even launch" means what? any error displayed? is there anything in the opencpn log? is there anything in the windows event log?
