OpenCPN and tidecurrents

How can I get tidecurrents on my charts?

I find barely any information on this, some links refer to ftp://ftp.bsh.de/Stroemungsvorhersagen/grib2/ but I have no idea 1. if this still is valid and 2. how to import these in OpenCPN.

In the taskbar the options for tidecurrent display are ticked.

I run 5.2.0.

Those files are grib files and displays just fine using the grib plugin.

I just downloaded one of the files.

Those options are for differently formatted data. Look at North America if you have the options activated, and you can see them in action. Read about Tides & Currents in the manual.

When I start the grib plugin it says ""No valid GRIB file". How can I get these, where? How to install?

Follow your own link above to get the grib files.
Read the manual to learn how to handle the grib plugin!

Thank you for your reply. However this link does not answer my question how to get the relevant grib files in my OpenCPN.

It would be most helpful if someone would point me in the right direction.

Follow Thomas links, it's all there!
For the grib file request you've to scroll down a little: https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...request_button
I'd suggest the SailDocs source as a start.

I agree that there is a very basic step missing in the current documentation.

1. Make up your mind were you want all your gribfiles on your computer.

2. Create a new directory, for example named "Gribs". I have mine at "/home/thomas/Sailing/Navigation/Gribs/" on a Linux.

3. Move all downloaded gribfiles to this directory

4 To open a grib, use the third button from the right on the plugin interface.
See picture below. Navigate to your newly created "grib" directory and pick the file to open.

Re: OpenCPN and tidecurrents

Alternative for download: directly access ftp server.
1. open an ftp program (such as filezilla)
2. create new site address: ftp.bsh.de
3. enter as anonymous
4. go to folder Stroemungsvorhersagen
5. go to folder grib2
6. go to Nordsee
7. select the file(s) for download
8. select folder on your pc/raspberry where you want download to be stored
9. execute

Re: OpenCPN and tidecurrents

Go to charts tides and add attachted harmonic.idx to the present idx.

Remove .pdf. en Add this IDX fille to chart tides.

Swtch currents on at the right piano menu and then you get the tide arrows on the chart. Not only for the Netherlands but for a wide area in Europe.

If you cick on the arrow with the right mouse button you get the tide graph display..

Nice; detailed and rather correct compared to official tide and current tables.

But for Belgian coast only one station available, right at the Dutch coast, next one at Calais.

To be useful more measuring locations would be required.

With RPI I do get these tide graphs; also the required blue-colored arrows are present on the chart.
However on my pc, with exactly the same setup, these blue colored arrows are not visible.
See attached:
1. RPI OpenCPN: shows the blue colored arrow in the center of the doc
2. RPI OpenCPN + tides graph: shows the tide graph after right click on blue arrow
3. PC OpenCPN: same chart area, no blue arrow visible.

The HARMONIC.IDX and NL_Current.IDX files are present, and in /options/charts/tides and currents these files are shown.

What should be done on the pc installation of OpenCPN to get these blue tide arrows shown?

Re: OpenCPN and tidecurrents

It is just the same setup for the Tide information. It works not only on my Raspberry Pi but also on my other systems.

But remember you must switch it to "on" the right piano menu.

In the right piano menu the settings for tide currents and tide points are activated on my pc. Disactivating or activating these 2 does not make the blue arrows appear.

I notice that the RPI has OpenCPN 5.2.0 and pc 5.2.4.

Re: OpenCPN and tidecurrents

The blue arrows appear only if you are zoomed close enough to the tide station, until then only general icon is shown for each station on the chart. Are you seeing the icons? If u do, are you zoomed close enough to the individual station?
