OpenCPN & etrex 20 & ubuntu = no position

Hello,

I tired to connect my Garmin eTrex 20 to OpenCPN in Windows 10 and in Ubuntu 16.04. In Windows it's works but I can't set up GPS under Ubuntu. I read twice manual on OpenCPN and it doesn't work. Is anyone have idea how to make Ubuntu & OpenCPN & eTrex 20 to work together?

best regards,
da1k

Assume that you are using the USB cable described in accessories for this GPS

( UBUNTU):

Install the gpsd and gpsd-clients packages
Code:
sudo apt-get install gpsd gpsd-clients
Go to Options-> Connections-> Add Conection and select "Network" plus the GPSD radio button. Address should be "localhost" and DataPorts should be set to 2947. Press ok, and it should work.

Hello,

Thanks for an answer. I did it what you wrote before posting here. It doesn't work for me. Have you got any other idea how to fix it?

best regards.

If your GPS is in NMEA mode, this will work. Check the GPS's settings and be sure it is set to NMEA output.

Also, in Opencpn, go to settings -> connections and "show nmea debug" can you see any activity in the debug window ??

Hi,

eTrex 20 works only in Garmin USB Mode not in NMEA, but in Windows OpenCPN works well.

best regards,

If so, plugin the GPS usb cable to the computer, go to tools, connections and add a new serial connection in opencpn. Check the "garmin mode for indata" check box in the connection. Data port will typically be /dev/ttyUSB0 , but choose the option shown in your drop down list.

Re: OpenCPN & etrex 20 & ubuntu = no position

Hello,
there is a similar problem on my installation. It doesn't work not under rpi3 ubuntu Mate 16.04. No NMEA activity.

I'd checked both ways: serial (/dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyUSB0) and network both with Garmin input. Garmin device is detected under bus 1 device 6, and a "usermod -a -G dialout __" is set .

Does anyone has an idea how to make it working together?
best regards,
Matt

Solved - I'd bought a new GPS Mouse, and saved our time...
