OpenCPN and BSB4 on Linux

I have OpenCPN running on my Windows7 partition, with the BSB plugin and CHS charts installed. When I try to run OpenCPN with wine on the Ubuntu 12.04 partition, it kinda runs, but doesn't seem to access the BSB4 charts.

Any help?

Druid,

the BSB4 plug-in is Windows only - no way to use it under Linux.

(Linux or OS-X would require a new development including a commercial licence agreement with Maptech)

I took the opportunity to test opencpn.exe with wine.
It works quite well, including AIS using a tcp connection.
A few random crashes though. I did not send the reports on to Dave
The BSB4 plugin loaded without problems, but I have no charts to test with.
A lot of error scenarios are possible....
To check simple things first...
What does your C:\users\Public\Application Data\opencpn\opencpn.log say?

I take for granted that you have loaded the bsb4 chart directory in the opencpn wine version.

@bcn
Linux can run quite a few windows program using wine. Read more WineHQ - Run Windows applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X

Re: OpenCPN and BSB4 on Linux

I looked at the log file and everything seems fine - says it loaded the bsb4 dlll correctly. The only wierd thing I can see is that it looks for *.kap, *.geo, *.000, *.s57, but my bsb4 directory has .BSB and .CAP. The program lists the charts as available, but doesn't use them.

Re: OpenCPN and BSB4 on Linux

..."upon further review..." It seems the bsb4 dll was loaded but not ENABLED. I Enabled it, and it looked at all the BSB4 files, but "Could not find registry key for decryption tool location at node HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Maptech\ChartKit\3.00\ Directories"

I tried booting with Win7 and it works fine.

druid...

I think you will need to enable your BSB4 charts (with Maptech key) in the Wine environment.. Wine does not use the same registry as your Win7 partition, so the BSB4 registration info on Win7 is unavailable to Wine.

Re: OpenCPN and BSB4 on Linux

I wonder.. could it be possible to develop a minimal program in wine to decrypt and pipe the charts through to opencpn so it can run natively in linux? This could be useful for google earth as well. I wonder.. how does opencpn.exe in wine compare to opencpn natively for performance?
