OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

W10 fully updated, fresh install of OpenCPN 5.6.2 and an o-charts dongle. When opening Option/Charts/o-charts/ and pressing the "chart refresh" button everything freezes and I have to use Task Manager to exit.

o-charts plugin version 1.0.24.0 (most recent version).

Even after reinstall the issue remains.

Works fine on laptop and Rpi (all on 5.6.0 or 5.6.2), but I paid for the dongle too, and that does not only not work but freezes OpenCPN on my desktop.

What now?

brice3010...
I'm on Win10, O 5.6.2 and o-charts 1.0.24.0 - No problem here.

As a start:
- With OCPN not running and inserting the Dongle in the USB - Did you get the Windows SG-Lock install message. (Only once!)
- If you open o-charts preferences does it detect the dongle? (See shot)
- Are there anything concerning the Dongle in the log-file?

They seem to be having a hard time themselves with this issue.

Has been ongoing since end of March.

I hope I managed to upload the logfile (I converted it to a txt file).

Edit: .txt did not work, I converted it to .doc

I changed the dongle to a different USB location, and restarted OpenCPN. In Options/Plugins/-o-charts/ the dongle shows being recognised, the systemname corresponds to what is shown in my o-charts customer account (same ID).

So your 2nd question is positive answer.

Contents of the logfile: I included it in my previous message; I am not knowledgeable enough to understand its contents.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

I can't see any obvious crash source in the log file. Some strange directories for plugin search but let's see if Dave can found out.
BTW: A simple trick to upload a (large) txt file to this is forum is to just rename it with a .pdf extension before upload: opencpn.txt.pdf

Next is to simplify by answering yes to the "Clean start question" on next start after a crash. Then when started without plugins activate o-charts only and make a new test to update charts list on o-charts.

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

Good idea. I did a clean start without plugins, activated o-charts only and tried to refresh o-charts chart list in options.

Freeze again.

Edit: I also deleted as much as possible from ../Users/user/AppData/Local/opencpn/ then restarted clean without pluigins, reactivated o-charts and tested the o-charts chart download/refresh: freeze again.

Brice...

1. Is there a confirmed internet connection on this machine?
2. Please try again, with dongle disconnected, and report results.

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

Hi Dave,

yes the internet connection is up and fast (vdsl).

I removed the dongle and started opencpn in safe mode.
Plugins: o-charts activated.
Options/Charts/o-charts/ clicked on "Chart refresh": opencpn freeze.

Task Manager required to end opencpn.

logfile attached.

Thanks for your time!
Erik

Erik..
The last attached logfile for one OCPN Session claims "Dongle detected" ?
Is it really the last log or did you forget to unplug the dongle?

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

Hi Hakan,

my apologies!! I just now redid the whole procedure and when I went into the upload window I realised the wrong folder was selected, my excuses...

To make sure it was 100% right this time I repeated the procedure and added the logfile again below:

1. remove logfile
2. open opencpn in safe mode (no dongle present)
3. activate o-charts
4. in Options/Charts/o-charts/ select "Chart Refresh"
5. opencpn freezing, force closure of opencpn
6. take logfile (verify time and date), copy to .doc and attach here.

Thanks a lot for your time!
Erik

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

Erik..
Yes seems the correct log.
I can't find more so let's await thoughts from Dave.

BTW:
I know what I would have done to my sometimes messed up Win10 test machine.
- Rename the config file: "C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.ini" to something else to force a "clean" OCPN starting from scratch.
- Reinstall OCPN.
- Start and in Options->Plugins Update master catalog and install o-charts plugin.
- Click OK, stop and restart OCPN
- Go to options->Charts->o-charts and "Update charts list".
(Be sure to have login credentials for o-charts.org available)

Re: OpenCPN 5.6.2 (windows 10) and dongle: freezing

Good ideas Hakan, thanks. I will implement this in an hour or so and report back.

Edit: UPDATE. After removing OCPN, the "C:\ProgramData\opencpn\opencpn.ini" is not present anymore (and the opencpn folder is gone): so a renaming of this file is not at issue here.
