OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

Hi,

I upgraded my ubuntu from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS
OpenCPN 5.0 was working like a charm under 18.04, now I upgraded to 20.04, it crashes (core dump)...
Any Idea would be welcome !
Thanks.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

Which package are you using for OpenCPN5.0 ?
It must be a version compiled for 20.04 aka focal.

You're probably better off to upgrade to the current beta version of OpenCPN, by adding this PPA repository: https://launchpad.net/~bdbcat/+archive/ubuntu/opencpn

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I am not sure we understand each other.
OPCN is already installed. It was installed and running under 18.04. Now, I upgraded the system to 20.04, it is crashing...
I don't like the idea to install it again from scratch because of all the plugins and configs already in place.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

What I did :
I changed the repo to : I uninstalled and reinstalled OPCN, It is now launching properly.
I lost my plugins, they seems not to be available anymore :
Quote:
jmp@ubuntu20-04:$ sudo apt install opencpn (TAB...)
opencpn opencpn-data opencpn-plugins opencpn-sglock-amd64
I don't have anymore access to 'opencpn-plugin-tactics' and 'opencpn-plugin-weatherrouting'
How to reinstall weather routing and Tactics plugins ?

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

I have just installed OCPN 5.1.520+50d0e0b on Ubuntu focal (clean install), started it up and tried to install ODraw 1.8.0 through plugin manager after updating to the latest master catalog. I cannot see ODraw even though it is in the ocpn-plugins.xml with both gtk3 & without gtk3. If I download and try and install the tar.gz file through the 'Import plugin...' button I get the error shown in the dialog box below.

If I download the non-gtk3 deb file from cloudsmith and install it through the Ubuntu installation process, apt, and then run OCPN it works quite happily. The deb and tar.gz files are from the same circleci build process with only the package file being different. They are both generated in the same job and uploaded to the cloudsmith repository at the same time.

If the plugin is OK being installed from a deb file why is it being marked as incompatible by Plugin Manager? There is no indication in the log of what is wrong. I have included the log file for a run that has the deb version installed and then asked Plugin Manager to cache the tar.gz file.

If I try to use the master catalog, after refreshing it, the plugin does not show up and there is no information provided to the user.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

@jongough
Same experience as you 20.04.

@juancho38
Not all upgrades of Ubuntu are equal..... The upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 was painless. Installed plugins continued to work etc. The upgrade to 20.04 is a bit disruptive, mainly due to the fact that Ubuntu no longer supports Gtk2.

So, all plugins needs to be recompiled.
You are seeing the "price" of early adoption, as OpenCPN is not yet fully supporting 20.04. It will come, but it will also take some time. Developers are busy preparing the upcoming 5.2 release.....

As for 20.04 plugins.....you can wait, or you can compile your own. Instructions in the manual.

Another alternative is to move to the current beta version....
In 5.2 there will be a new, built in, way to download and upgrade plugins.
The caveat is that there, at this time, still are very few of the plugins available in this new Plugin Manager.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

As a service to early adopters of *buntu 20.04/Focal a bunch of plugins at this link https://gofile.io/?c=aSSmRp

No support guaranteed. No guarantee that the plugins are up to date, but all should be very recent.

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

If you want to use ODraw then you will need to download the focal version of the deb file from cloudsmith which is here:
https://cloudsmith.io/~jon-gough/rep...ges/?q=*focal*

Re: OpenCPN 5.0 / Ubuntu 20.04

When I wanted to abandon Windows and looked for another but good operation system about more than 10 years ago I found Linux very good. But after more inspection and trying out Linux I was as frustated with Linux as with Windows. Not only there are too many and all different Linux versions but also these problems to always need a software version for the particular Linux derivate and also for one derivate as e.g. Ubuntu for each version a special software version. This makes Linux absolutely unusable and is the reason for Linux never getting a greater distribution. The Linux developers have killed their operating system themselfs. Very sad.
