OpenCPN 3.0 on Mac shows OverZoom

I just installed OpenCPN 3.0 on my MacBook Pro, running OS-X Lion (10.7.4). I replaced OpenCPN 2.5. All my charts were lost as they were located in /applications/OpenCPN.app/SharedSupport/charts, overwritten by the new/replacement application. I was able to recover the lost charts to a new folder using Time Machine (backup) to restore.

Following the FAQ process, I had searched for OpenCPN.log and OpenCPN.ini; neither exist on my machine. Indeed, the directories specified don't exist.

When I opened OpenCPN 3.0 I got a black window with OverZoom in the top left corner. There were no charts in the ToolBox.

I copied the restored charts to /Applications/OpenCPN.app/Contents/SharedSupport/charts/BSB_ROOT & ENC_ROOT.

At one point OpenCPN did display one chart, but when I tried to zoom out I wound up with the black screen again.

I've attached screen captures of the basic OpenCPN window and its ToolBox.

Thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide.

Re: OpenCPN 3.0 on Mac shows OverZoom

Never copy your charts into the OpenCPN.app. This is the application bundle only!!!
Copy your charts into a new created folder in /Users/YourUserName/Documents/
This is the place where all your documents as well as charts have to go.

The file "opencpn.log" is in /Users/YourUserName/Library/Logs/
The folder "Library" is hidden in Lion. You will need a special tool to make visible hidden folders or files.
Also the file "opencpn.ini" is within the hidden folder in /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/
Furthermore if you want to use special features of OpenCPN you have to create the needed folders for these features in /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ such as "Layers", "UserIcons" or "UserTCData".

If you can't get a tool to make hidden folders and files visible you can do this for the user library folder:
While in the Finder, simply press Command-Shift-G to bring up the Go to Folder dialog. To access the Library, type in
~/Library and click Go. It is possible to type the path to any folder into this dialog. The ~ character is just a shortcut to your home folder. A more verbose alternative would be /Users/YourUserName/Library .

Re: OpenCPN 3.0 on Mac shows OverZoom

Thanks Gerhard! Using Command-Shift-G I was able to find the log and ini files.

I moved my charts to my Documents folder, then deleted the original (Applications) entries and added the Documents files. OpenCPN appeared to scan the charts and update its database. However, it still showed a black window with the notation "OverZoom." So I clicked the Zoom-Out button repeatedly until the window showed an outline map of the world; black background and blue outlines. There was an area of green outlines -- and one red -- so I centered on that and zoomed in. And my chart was appropriately displayed.

So I guess I'm back in business -- or pleasure.

Thanks again!

Re: OpenCPN 3.0 on Mac shows OverZoom

Hooligan6a, when I zoomed out I found my chart was centered somewhere in the mid-Atlantic. I had to zoom quite far out to see anything at all. When I did start seeing things, it was blue lines on black background. The blue lines turned out to be outlines of land masses; South America in my case.

Beyond that, I'm afraid I have no advice to offer.

Good luck

If you have read and followed Installing Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage, installed some charts, and still have a problem? Please publish your log file.
