Re: Open CPN with Windows 10

It works fine with W10, perhaps even better than XP or W8 as W10 has a smaller footprint and seems somewhat faster than the other two.

Regards,
Doug

Thanks for the info Doug, I will try it on both, never used Open CPN before, and I am getting it of a friend.

If you mean GPS then you may need to get a new one.

Don't get it of a friend. Download a fresh version, it's free no need to pass it around but of course that's allowed too

Re: Open CPN with Windows 10

just keep in mind that Windows 10 is talkative.

It does lots of background internet traffic, for example its silently downloading updates (and sharing these updates for other's to download them from your PC, hijacking your internet bandwith for this).

If you want to use that PC also for email via satellite phones or 3G this can a problem unless you know how to silence Windows 10 .

And, it'll even download artsy photos to display on wake up as well. Make sure you set your network connection to "metered".

Re: Open CPN with Windows 10

I didn’t know that Windows 10 worked in the background.

Just checked my setting and its off, but thanks for pointing that out.

Re: Open CPN with Windows 10

Rabbi,

You can, and probably should, turn off peer networking. You can easily turn off the image loader as well. The only thing I don't think you can turn off is the automatic downloading of updates. You can turn off the automatic installs, which you probably should. The metered network does not keep the automatic updates from downloading, but slows them down, at least as far as I can tell.

Hope this helps,
Doug

Me too. Better in fact it seems on Win 10. the Bu353 GPS didn't work with WIn 8 so I swapped it back then to the later S4 one before subsequently upgrading to win 10. I haven't gone back and tried the old puck because it is in use on my 'boat only' laptop( as in left on board, pinch it if you must) that is running on Vista still.

I wonder how you manage to make it work. I have same and it does not work for me. Seems that W10 does not recognise it or driver or whatever reason
