open cpn on windows 10

Recently had issues getting GPS dongle to work on new laptop. Seems like windows 10 is very different from my old w7 unit. BU353 dongle does not work, needed to go on Amazon and spend a few bucks. Now I know that the dongle is essentially plug and play, a serial com port is assigned on the first plug in, no software required. The only trick was using tools-options-connections in CPN to set the com port assignment number and specify 9600 baud. The manual illustration showed 4800 which is what I used on my W7 setup but apparently it can vary with the dongle. Mine needed 9600.

Do I still hate windows 10? You betcha, designed for illiterates, attempts to control software suppliers, terrible desktop, ...
I still like openCPN; easy route planning, nice backstop if autopilot issues so its not like I hate

Re: open cpn on windows 10

And your message is? Random win 10 bashing?

I have zero issues with OpenCPN on Windows 10. Works very reliable for many years.
Including interfacing it with the onboard systems.
Windows 10 and all the software I use on it for my professional work, work also flawless for many years, but hey, each has their own experience.

I also feel there are other companies putting much more stringent measures up towards what their customers can run on the hardware and operating system which they bought from them. Will not put a name on it though.
Microsoft is still fairly open in that respect.

Of course folks can use Linux if they do not like either of the two mainstream options.
