oeSENC computer freeze

Using ubuntu 16.04 and opencpn 4.84
When installing full set of oeSENC charts for Norway, zooming out in some areas (Tromsø) makes opencpn to completely freeze the computer - only solution is to take a "hard"" restart. - gl on/of doeen't matter. Deactivating all except for the Lofoten-Troms - Finnmark chart set makes the situation better.

Try to move your boat to "Tromsø" and it's easy to reproduce when zooming out to large scale.
there is extremely many chart objects in that area and it seems that the system gets "overloaded" and freeze.

If you move your boat to the Oslo fjord area with the same full chart set loaded on the same pc it works just fine.

Doing the same with cm93 charts and there is no problems.

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

I can confirm your observation. Don't know if O realy freeze or just takes a very very long time to open charts. Cpu load for Opencpn is 100%.

Change the setting of Options->Display->Advanced Vectorchart zoom/Scale weighing to a lower (negative) value does help. For me a value of -2 is fine.

Could be a bad chart. As I repeat the same for say the Bergen area I can use a zzom/scale setting of +5 altough O gets pretty slow then.

For the Tromso area the last lines in the log are:
Code:
09:01:33 CEST: Initializing Chart /home/dirk/Charts/oeSenc/tailandmint183-NOn-2018-1/OC-47-8392E4.oesenc

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

Your log seems identical to mine - I can't find any errors in the log file.
Tried to run
Code:
[-unit_test_1
but it seems that with oeSENC charts this does not work the same way as with s57 charts.

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

@Hubert,
By removing the last chart file mentioned in my log (NOn-2018-1/OC-47-9392E4.oesenc), rebuild the database it works again here. Even on zoom/weight +5.

And a further test removing all other charts except this one causes O to hang again. see screenshot.

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

Does it freeze the whole computer? That would be a bug with the graphics driver.. otherwise you should kill opencpn.

I think osenc is not optimized the way normal charts are, and even if it were the rendering of vector charts is in a very slow way. For simple cases it might even seem fast, but with lots of objects it's not implemented in a good way, could be 10x or 100x faster than it is with better code.

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

You can still move the mouse, but no ctrl+alt+t to open a terminal. It halts for 20 minutes and the opencpn crash and you can continue.
Mostly, the Tromsø area is one of the places in the world with most chart objects per square kilometer - could at last vbe a reason for slowchart movement in that area.

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

Just for info I've tested on Win10
I get no error or hang using the mentioned chart OC-47-9392E4. I can use that in both quilt and non quilt modes and all works fine when zoom weighting is up to +1. If I try to increase to +4 so many charts are loaded the system became slow and close to not responding. I suppose that's due the amount of charts in the area about Tromsö as Petter mentioned.

In Linux there is limit of 20 charts at the same time, if that's still valid? See: https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do..._power_systems

Could that limit play a role here?

It sounds like maybe lack of ram. If you run swapon, does it quickly fill memory? Do you max out the swap space?

If opencpn crashes, does it say where?

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

Is there a way to limit the number of charts being loaded?
Is it possible to make the Trompso charts into several Chart Groups and select the areas as needed?
If this fixes the problem, then perhaps the pros will know what to do.

Re: oeSENC computer freeze

When opencpn freeze, there is 9 charts loaded. I managed to open a terminal. Opencpn use 100% cpu and 12,5 mem.

I have changed
[Settings].... MEMCacheLimit=1535 and

Settings] .... NCacheLimit=40

It seems to make no difference. Removing OC-47-9392E4.oesenc and the system will not freeze any more but still very slow when zooming out
