OCPN losing data - does this really happen?

Yesterday, we made our first passage of the season and I carefully recorded our track. Very pleased with the result
Today, my nice track is nowhere to be found - vanished

Now after the passage I tried to look up tidal times using the UK Tides plugin and got a crash. This post is not about that plugin - that is for elsewhere - but OCPN crashed.

Am I right in my hunch that my nice track only gets saved on a clean OCPN exit? Is that why it is no more?

If this is the case, then we need OCPN to have a Save menu item and, maybe, an option to auto-save from time to time.

Or do I need to look elsewhere for why my track is gone?

No, your track does not get saved only on exit.

Why not saving every hour at .00 plus adding a tick mark? Just as an idea..

Forgive my ignorance Dave, but what Navobj.xml backup files? All I see is the usual .xml, .xml.1 through to xml.5 and they all have the latest time stamp.

OCPN uses a rotating navobj backup scheme.
The xml.1 through to xml.5 files are the last 5 clean copies of navobj.xml. They may individually be renamed to navobj.xml, to recover lost data manually.

Keep in mind that the backup set is rotated on every clean exit. So, if you experience problems with lost data, stop everything and immediately save those 5 backups to a safe location.. You may then inspect them at your leisure to find the "lost" data.
