OCPN installation on Ubuntu 12.10 64bit fails.

Im running into installation trouble when trying to install OCPN on Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit version.

I have installed dependencies first, but get errors while installing OCPN.

Seems like something wrong in the deb file... I have downloaded it and tried several times, and I'm also getting the same errors on another Xubuntu system...

Can anyone verify that the installation file is ok?

I just downloaded the official file (again) from SourceForge. I have the same Ubuntu as you. I had no problems at all. So it's something with your system.
It could be a corrupt download. Try again!
Do you have libbz2 installed?
Dpkg does not pull dependencies. Try "sudo gdebi <downloaded_opencpn_file.deb>" instead. The command "gdebi" will automatically install the dependencies for you. You can also try to just doubleclick on the deb file. This should bring up one of the graphical installers.

How do I check if I have libbz2 installed?
The command gdebi gave me "command not found"
I have tried several downloads now, same error.

When doubleclick on the file i get: "The package is of bad quality"

First run

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then

sudo apt-get install bzip2 gdebi

Copy and paste to a command line.

If bzip2 is already installed the output will tell you.

Try again!

Or simply use the stable PPA at https://launchpad.net/~opencpn/+archive/opencpn and you will be fine...

After that you install OpenCPN through Ubuntu Software Center, or how they call it now, just like you would install any other program that's in Ubuntu's repositories. And then you get the new stable versions with your normal updates. Before that, you have to at least once "refresh" the software packages in the Update Manager...

OpenCPN can't be found in the software center...

I think that I'm bouncing back to CentOS or Scientific Linux...
Those distros where easier to handle...

To be honest, I can't imagine anything that could go wrong...

Strange.. After trying the recipes several times it installed trough Software Center...
The last time before it installed it said that libtinyxml2.6.2 was missing, but when trying to install that I got the message that this was obsolete... So I deleted the PPA and added it again as the recipe states...
I downloaded opencpn from the ppa repo directly and launched it by clicking the file.

Changes done to Ubuntu during the last days was upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04 (Raring)...
I did add the ppa for Ubuntu 13.04 after deleting the one for 12.10...

Launches as normal now

Your user experience will be similar, there are not that many changes in 13.04. People say the performance, especially graphical, is way better in 13.04 than with 12.04 LTS. The downside is shorter support, if you care for it... If you just want to start playing with it, maybe start with a virtual machine rather than dual-boot system - it is, say, safer...

Thanks Nohal, for the advice. Yes, I Do NOT want to screw up my Win7 install!!

What is a 'virtual machine' ? is it the same as installing as a program under windows, so that it can be uninstalled using windows uninstaller? Or is it just running Ubuntu on Memory Stick?

I would like to have Ubuntu for testing/learning purposes, but what I want it for now is to compress the 1980, 1990 and 2000s Seawind etc for Sean. He wanted several versions. I have downloaded 2000, 1990 and am 1/2 through 1980. Will get some of the other data too.

It would also be good to be able to upload those to github. He said you could host it on your github. Is it possible to upload the files to my apache server and then you get them with ftp or using "file thingie" a php program that acts similar to ftp?
Or possibly I could use my github account?

You can create a virtual computer using https://www.virtualbox.org/ , vmware, MS VirtualPC or similar software - like that you can run another operating systems without actual hardware available and without danger of screwing up your machine.

Github is not a good place to host big binary files, but we have some space to host those with the plugin downloads on Sourceforge. But first things first - let's produce the data to be hosted as the first step...
