When I hit Apply, the database started updating again (all charts, takes quite awhile).
I wish this were more selective about the work needed to complete properly!
Just process the new charts and skip the others. It could pretty easily be an option.


Anyway attached is a section where it is processing NZenc charts.

My chart group that I created does not work.
It points to "C:\Data-Hesper\Chart\Other\NZenc"

I turned on the "All Charts" group and found s63 charts showing for NZ.
These are pointed to "C:\ProgramData\opencpn\s63\s63charts\NZ" and below.

This must be due to the requirement that the charts be encrypted.

So I expect I should use "C:\ProgramData\opencpn\s63\s63charts\NZ" for the NZenc group, and should add that path to the Chart Directory if it is not there.

Even though the path is in the Chart Files Tab, this path cannot be selected in the Chart Groups Tab.

I inadvertently caused the entire chart directory to be re scanned and DB rebuilt. We really really need a way to stop this nonsense rebuild of Db.

Anyway my NZenc chart group still does not show the S63 files.


Then I found the new ProgramData... S63/NZ files listed in the paths under ChartGroups.

Now Chart Groups works fine, showing Russell-Paihia and it is much much faster.

When I updated to Opencpn v5.6.2 the Groups Nzenc no longer works.
Why is this?

I'm in NZ now and wanted to install the free NZ ENC charts. I found this thread and... yeeesh! Has it gotten easier? Is there somewhere with step-by-step instructions for NZ?

Bruce, It has been awhile since I installed them. They kept updating my charts after I got it working. Then I quit. I think the process has gotten a little better since then, so all I can say is just dive in through ocharts. It is free after you get the certificate I believe.

Thanks, Rick. I started the process and followed the instructions in the S63 plugin manual to go to 0-charts to get a userpermit. But there is no option for it at o-charts. I've emailed them.


I'll document the procedure as I go through and publish something on TheChartLocker.com when I'm done.

Go to the S63 tab at O-charts. [Edit or https://o-charts.org/shop/en/s-63/8-userpermit.html if it is not showing up for you let me know, it shows up at €12.50 for me, and in stock) [/Edit]

Add the user permit to your cart.

Go through the purchase process, importantly creating an account at O-charts.

Pay for the permit.

Log in to your account at O-charts, once the purchase is completed and load the fingerprint from your system to the S63 permit you purchased.

Then take your permit over to the NZ ENC registration.

Then follow the NZ guide for charts.

It has been a few years, but I think that covers most of it in short form.

Thanks for that. Heading out sailing for a few days but will look into it when I get back. The S63 plugin manual implies that I can get a permit by just uploading my system identifier. It does not say I have to buy a permit. That was the confusion.

Not advocating for the use of old charts in any way, but if the hassles are too great, the last NZ RNC set is available:

Yep. Got 'em and am using them as I type. Thanks for that. Thought I'd delve into the new ENC. Can also download the old RNCs right into OpenCPN.

From 2025 on there will be an o-charts oeSENC version of the NZ set as well.
Content and update periods will be identical.

Disadvantage:
- we have to charge for it as IC-ENC asks for a fee.
- not an "official chart"

Advantage:
- no S-63 UserPermit and InstallPermit requirements
- install and updates from within OpenCPN much easier
- installable on Android
