NOAA ENC xml files invalid?

I went to update my charts in OpenCPN after some time. First, the the NOAA ENC xml in the chart catalog is missing -- so I updated the source URL to the new NOAA URL. All of the updated URLs I have tried have come back with "Catalog is not valid."

I'm running 5.6.2 on MacOS 12.2. See attached screenshots.

Any ideas?

Works just fine for me on pretty much the same setup, just with up to date macOS. Try again.

Yes, of course.

Looking closely on your pictures, you are for some reason trying to use different catalog incompatible with OpenCPN's chart downloader. The correct catalog URL for all the US charts is https://www.charts.noaa.gov/ENCs/ENCProdCat.xml

The only conclusion I can come to is you for some reason did modify the settings manually and used wrong URL.

I did modify the settings because I was getting the "Failed to find new catalog: https://www.charts.noaa.gov/ENCs/ENCProdCat.xml" error dialog.

I am able to successfully retrieve the above URL from multiple sources on my local network, including my local machine. I just keep getting the "Failed to find new catalog" dialog when I attempt it.

Re: NOAA ENC xml files invalid?

If you use this access you can download your NOAA ENC.
Good luck.

Try to change the path or delete the folder with the NOAA charts and add the default again. Some people in the past reported some permission problems on macOS we were never able to identify and disappeared as soon as they removed the directory and created dit again.

This fixed it - thanks!

This is extremely, extremely puzzling.

It is, especially as looking at the permissions on the files and directories they seem OK.

Bottlecap....
What base directory are you using for charts?
Maybe /User/xxx/Documents/Charts?
We have seen some trouble with this on recent MacOS versions. Usually resolved by establishing your chart base directory as /Users/xxx/Charts

Good Luck

I think you might be onto something. In recent years I've noticed applications often need to be granted explicit access to Downloads or Documents.

Some time in the past year or so I encountered a similar issue, but unfortunately don't recall the specific resolution; I think I cleared the catalogs and re-created them.

Attached is an example of one setting to double-check.

Thanks for the info. I never knew that an app needs specific permission to access "Documents".
