No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

I'm not able to get wifi on my Raspberry Pi 3B after installing the openplotter_V.1.0.0_NOOBS from Sailoog. OpenCPN loads. Also, I get wifi when I use a regular NOOBS. Another strange thing is if I'm running my laptop(Win10) after I turn on the RPi the laptop loses the wifi signal and can't get it back until I reboot it. Where the wifi signal icon should be in the RPi I get the symbol below:
Does anyone have suggestions as to what's happening and how to fix it? I have a 32GB EVO Samsung microSD card.

Thanks

Re: No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

Thank you very much. That was fast. OK I'll go delve through that.

Maybe these site will be helpful?

"I have 3 raspberryPIs and all them are dropping wifi connection after sometime."

https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.co...n-raspberry-pi

"The Raspberry Pi tends to drop network connection (especially wireless wifi) rather fast, which is a real pain when you're trying to do anything that has the RPi running constantly from a remote location (like our RaspEye does).

However, it's possible to detect wifi connection loss and perform upon it. It's easiest to just do a full system reboot.

Good Luck.

Re: No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

Thanks for the comeback. I actually have a different problem in that I never seem to get a signal. And it only happens when I use the openplotter NOOBS. So I'm hoping someone here who uses it might have run into the same thing. Aren't all legitimate RPi's the same?

And what is that strange symbol?

I'm old enough to remember when sailing was about boats.

Re: No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

What settings do you have in the network tab in openplotter?

With a RPi3B (not B+) I have a USB dongle as well as the internal, the internal wifi acts as the access poin with the usb dongle connecting to a mobile phone network for web access.

Network mode - RPi3: AP + client
sharing internet device - wlan0

With a Pib you can have the internal wifi both creating a network and connecting to another network at the same time. Think it's RPi3: AP/client.

Re: No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

When you say “Network Tab” I assume you mean the icon in the upper right on the taskbar. Here are two pictures of that area with NOOBS and chartplotter NOOBS. I'm not sure what the two X's/two vertical line symbol means except, perhaps, no signal.

I imagine there's some sort of forum associated with Sailoogs. Or maybe I should try loading openCPN onto NOOBS myself. The openchartplotter NOOBS just seemed so simple. And I assume most people got it to work. Or I might buy a wifi dongle and try that. But the Rpi wifi obviously works.

No, the network tab in openplotter, you need to set that up so the wifi adapter(s) know what to do.

Re: No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

Conachair, just before I opened your reply I found the tab. Thanks for coming back explicitly with the screen shot. First I found that the default network mode was for RPi3+ but I have the 3B. I changed it but that didn't work. Then I thought if I don't have an extra dongle I can't be both a client and an AP. So I changed the network mode to just a client. Now that works. I have a connection and I'm ready to move on to the next problem.

But I'm curious, I looked at Jim321's link and see this statement:
"On Raspberry Pi 3 you can use the built-in WIFI device as AP and client. No USB wlan stick is needed!"

So I believe I shouldn't need another dongle but that didn't work. I'll read some more.

Thanks a lot for everyone's help!

Try setting to RPi3: AP/client to get the internal Pi3 B wfif adapter to create both an access point and log onto a network.

Re: No wifi on openplotter Raspberry Pi

rpi 3
ap/client = use onboard wifi as ap client.
ap+client = use usb dongle as ap client.

the onboard wifi is weak it's better to use usb.
