Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Here is a little fix for the ship orientation problem when no Hdt message is received. It does not deal with the Dashboard problem.

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

OK,
I've been an avid OCPN user for the past 3 years.
I occasionally would get the ship heading different from the COG. This pointed the ship icon in the wrong direction. Previously, doing an autopilot heading calibration to my magnetic compass direction would correct the problem. After much consternation, we installed and got gradar running. Took the boat out for the first time in 6 months to check the electronics. The gradar works wonderfully. the only problem is that the HDG is different from the COG, pointing the boat in the wrong direction, incorrectly aligning the radar image.... frustrating to watch. We have two GPSs, the ship's GPS and another that is part of the AIS transponder. I get less dancing around, of course when I turn off the AIS, but the ship icon is still at an angle to COG. In our testing we were mostly traveling under 4 knots, but this hasn't been a problem previously......
Help!?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Hi Matt, is the error equal to variation? Could be incorrect true heading calc...

Re: No HDG Data Display In OpenCPN

Hi Matt,
Variation would be a few degrees. Own ship is pointing 30 or 40 degrees off.
I'm doing some checking. I installed a Nav PC at the helm, a foot above the compass. It might be affecting the compass, which is what I'm trying to calibrate the AP compass to. I checked with a hand bearing compass and found the helm compass out by 15 degrees. I might have found the problem. Maybe need to twist some wires....
