No COG, SOG
Hi,
First post ever on a forum. Problem with Open CPN (2.5.0). Have GPS coordinates for boat position, but can't get SOG or COG data.
Anyone can help ?
Many thanks,
JF

Re: No COG, SOG
Hi Jf
welcome to the forum!
would be interesting to see what data your GPS is sending.
turn on the data stream window in "Toolbox/GPS", enlarge the data window a bit, and let us see some bits...

Re: No COG, SOG
JF2, If you have the gps happening, you can configure the dashboard to show COG+SOG and whatever you like
help file..
The Dashboard PlugIn | Official OpenCPN Homepage
that is, you can configure the "Dashboard" plugin to show SOG and COG in various size and fonts...click the Wrench, choose Plugins tab, click dashboard, click preferences and commence configurating! The dashboard window can be resized by dragging edges and corners...

Re: No COG, SOG
Thanks happy seagull, already tried that part. Seems that Open CPN just can't turn the GPS signal into COG or SOG.
Dirk, here's a typical line I get.
15 :43 :05 $GPGSV,3,2,06,29,19,232,36,13,06,130,36,,,,,,,,*70
Thanks !

Re: No COG, SOG
Hi JF
the GPGSV wouldn't even give position, I think. There must be more:
Examples:
GPGGA: fix data
GPGLL: Lat/Lon data
GPGSA: overall satellite reception data
GPGSV: detailed satellite data
GPRMB: minimum recommended data when following a route
GPRMC: minimum recommended data
It would be good to know which sentences your OpenCPN is receiving.
Which GPS are you using?

Re: No COG, SOG
Looked at the stream for a couple of minutes and saw these.
GPGLL
GPGGA
GPGSV
GPGSA
I use a Magellan handheld GPS, model triton.

Re: No COG, SOG
Yuck!
no GPRMC? Which triton (trying to find the manual)?
Tritonforum.com • View topic - $GPRMC in NMEA
Next step: A recording of your NMEA data from the GPS and replicate the problem. There are several tools, including opencpn in debug mode. How comfortable are you editing config&ini files?
I am off to bed for now... see ya tomorrow!

Re: No COG, SOG
Hi Dick,
The model is the Triton 400. I went to see the link you sent regarding the triton forum, very useful. Perhaps they upgraded the software in the GPS. The version I have dates back to 2008. I'll try this lead.
Regarding your question, let me say that I am spectacularely unfamiliar with any type of programming.
I'm in New Zealand, so time for me to have dinner !
Thanks for your kind help. No big deal if I can't sort this one.

Most GPS will send a SOG ~0.0 and a random COG when at standstill. But JF's Triton 400 doesn't seem to send the needed NMEA sentence, weird.

Re: No COG, SOG
JF
easiest way to record NMEA data from within OpenCPN is to use the plug-in "VDR" = Voyage data recorder.
Get it from
PlugIns | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Record ~10 secs of NMEA data, and publish the results
