Re: NMEA 2000 over WiFi ?

Yes, your post is a bit long winded!

To get OpenCPN to support PGN's 129283 & 129284 submit an issue on the OpenCPN github site and keep complaining. Dave et al. seem to be responsive to the squeaky wheel approach to adding features.

Regarding “RAW” this term is generally used to denote a file / protocol that is are so named
Please don't confuse the protocol used by different CAN Bus adapters to communicate with a PC; Actisense binary, Yacht Devices, N2K ASCII, NR2K RAW etc. with the NMEA 2000 on the wire protocol. As I said OpenCPN or any plugin can generate and transmit any PGN.

Also bear in mind that some of the protocols that were recently added ONLY support reception of NMEA 2000 messages. This is a limitation of the adapter manufacturers and has nothing to do with OpenCPN.

For whatever reason the developers chose to listen to the squeaky wheels requesting support for NMEA 2000 WiFi interfaces, rather than using their scarce resources to provide support for the navigation PGN's.

Thanks.
I will keep on the squeaky wheel about making OCPN consistent in what it sends OUT if it says it has N2000 communications!.

Until then I think its for both of us to discuss terminology on RAW formats protocols used to communicate with gateways anymore.
We totally agree that the lower level ISO structure N2000 hardware is CanBus, and “something” therefor has to use ‘some protocol’ to send the data to make the canbus datagram.

I think the emphasis on N2000 WIFI interfaces is because they seem a simple solution to get OCPN to “talk” N2000. The RAW discussion is a can of worms!

99% of the time the best way to use the gateways is to send 0183 to them, and let them convert to N2k and vice versa. OCPN works fine with 0183 messages! And so do all the wifi <> N2K gateways.

The RAW protocols really only becomes important for N2000 messages for which there are no agreed 0183 equivalents.

Cheers!
