Re: Nema2k and cpn

Opencpn uses nmea0183 and does not use nmea2k. If you can output nmea0183 to Opencpn there is a plugin that you can possibly convert/ adjust the depths using whatever math you want. The plugin is nmeaconverter_pi. Find the plugins manual in the user manual.

Re: Nema2k and cpn

Rick thanks!
Love that Bristol your sailing. Just finished rehabbing a Pearson 35 1978. Has similar lines to you vessel. Wanted to buy a Bristol but was to pricey for me.
Thanks again
Leo

Yes they were about 10 years after the Peasons came into production. I would not be surprised if they didn't share mold plugs. On some models.

Re: Nema2k and cpn

I feel you are an experienced sailor. Do you do any consulting for pay? I am looking for an individual for consulting on a small nena 2k network on my P35 which I have rebuilt every system stem to stern including extrrior and interior paint. Replaced hand rails with stainless.all new windows the list goes on Beta marine engine 25.
If you are interested in consulting via email please let me know.
Thanks for any all consideration.
Sincerely Leo

Re: Nema2k and cpn

If it is a NMEA 2000 depth sensor, then OpenCPN cannot connect to it unless you install a NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183 converter, such as an Actisense NGW-1

However even if a converter is installed, OpenCPN is not capable of configuring the sensor for a number of reasons. Firstly OpenCPN does not have an easy option for sending "one-off" custom NMEA 0183 sentences to a device, but more importantly, to the best of my knowledge there is no NMEA 0183 sentence that corresponds to any of the NMEA 2000 messages that are used by manufacturers to configure their NMEA 2000 devices.

Also the answer depends on which model Garmin depth sensor you have. For example I do know that a Garmin GDT 43 does use standard (ie. non proprietary) NMEA 2000 messages to configure settings such as depth offset.

For some gory details on configuring a related product, the Garmin GST 43 refer to https://mt.panbo.com/2016/12/garmin-...-triton-2.html
