Need help getting OpenCPN running with Ubunutu 12.04

I did "groups" and then I have : "corinactis adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare"
I tried "sudo usermod -a -G dialout $USER "
and try again to input my USB gps
Always nothing !

Do you now belong to the group "dial out"?
If not, make sure you do!
The net is full of Linux instructions, if you need more help, to add yourself to a group.

I don't know how to know if I'am now belong to the group "dial out".
Just I did the last instruction you gave me and after that no information , nothing happen special, then I don't know how to add me to a group.
I am OK to learn

I found the solution from a French Forum, Anyway, thank you very much for your help. I will remember you and tell about your great forum. I learned à lot
The solution was: gtkterm to change the configuration of ttyS0, it was on 9600 baud, and in the "help" from openCPN to put the gps on NMEA mode.
6 days (several hours per days) of research, and one white night !!!
And it works now
