missing something here

I went down to the boat to get it ready for a few days cruise. OpenCPN was running on my laptop, but only the crude yellow and blue world outline was showing, my location was 500 miles away, no GPS connection, no toolbar, menu bar, or chart status bar showing.

The computer says that my 353 GPS puck is alive and well.

My charts are still in my computer

I downloaded 5.6.0 while trying to figure it out.

Restart made no difference.

Windows 10 laptop.

What am I doing wrong? My computer skills compare unfavorably with those of the average 8 year old, so put it in simple terms, please.

Re: missing something here

Is your GPS puck a S4? Need the S4 to work w/windows 10.

Re: missing something here

Good question, Bill. At the moment I'm using one out my window that is VFAN Model UG-353, and is fairly new, but the older puck on the boat has been running OpenCPN version 5.0.0 for several years on Windows 10. That's the crunch - It was running fine last week, and without my changing anything, switched to this opening "chart" and no tool/chart bars. If we don't find another problem, I'll order a guaranteed S4. Thanks.

I just checked. Yep, both pucks are compatible with Windows 10.

Re: missing something here

I got my charts and chart bar back by specifying a new folder. Still no tool or menu bar, just "navigate, view, tools, help, none of which lead me to the full bar.

Re: missing something here

-Are you able to see which COMM port the puck is using in Windows?
-Are you able to use the GPS program that came with the puck to see the satellites?

I think you cannot access the puck with two programs at once, either OpenCPN or the Ublox or whatever the included monitoring software is.

Did you read this page on the GPS puck?

Re: missing something here

If I go to the device manager, ports; I get Communications port (COM1) and u-blox 7 GPS/GNSS Receiver (COM3). If I hit on the u-blox under general properties I get Location Port_#0002 Hub_#0001. I also get This device is working properly. Is that port 2 versus Com3 my problem?

Re: missing something here

"Show Menu Bar" and the "ALT" key doesn't result in the menu bar showing up.

So far so good. I would make sure the Ublox software with the world map is not running and then check that OpenCPN is looking for the GPS puck on COM3.

Re: missing something here

OpenCPN does NOT need a GPS to work ( I frequently use it for planning without one).
Have you tried disconnecting your puck and then opening OpenCPN?

If you still don't get the charts and menus, then the GPS is irrelevant. First thing I'd try is checking your drive for errors.

Re: missing something here

I guess my tablet is 5.2.x
Pic of my tablet screen and puck, moved puck from tablet to laptop and had to adjust COMM port in OpenCPN.
The tablet does not have the Ublox software installed but looks like it can monitor satellites just fine.

Re: missing something here

Just took the Win10 laptop from 4.8.8 to 5.6.0, did upgrade instead of parallel, no issues with charts or GPS puck.

Re: missing something here

I made two "error" tests. i stripped OpenCPN from my laptop, and reloaded. No joy. Then, I loaded 5.6.0 on this computer, which has never had any version thereon on it. No joy again. No Menu Bar, without which I can't do much elsee. aside, the GPS puck is working; it's software correctly reports my lat/Long, but that's not the immediate problem. I tried

Tools
Options
User Interface
Show Menu Bar
Apply
OK.

Still doesn't show the Menu Bar.

My boat is pinned to the dock until I straighten this out, and I'm out of ideas.
