Mimo Monitors

I want to have my netbook or notebook running at the nav station, with GPS and AIS fed into OpenCPN. No problem. I would like to then add in a USB cable from the computer to the helm, where I can see what is displayed on the computer down below. I know that Mimo makes small monitors that are USB-powered that simply duplicate the main screen. They also make some that are touch-screen. I think the Mimo monitors are only 800x480 pixels...that may be a problem. I think the cable run will be about 10 feet. Has anyone tried an arrangement like this?

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, JSwanson.

The MIMO MAGIC TOUCH appear to have a 10.1" screen with 1024x600 resolution.

You can get a powered usb cable that allows for greater distance. Just use google to track one down. Got mine from Amazon. Then again I use linux so cannot comment on the efficiency of the same with windows as its a different beast. For example a four port hub does not need power under linux but windows it does.

Re: Mimo Monitors

I am using the iMo Mini-Monster Touch 10-inch with my netbook. The netbook is running OpenCPN with WinXP SP3. The screen is resistive NOT capacitive, but works well for basic screen navigation. Resolution is 1024x600 and OCN shows nicely, but don't expect sunlight readable. Has a 4.5ft cable.

On the boat the iMo is mounted on a TV bracket which swings out into the companionway. This makes a bit of shade which helps viewing.

There are reports of the monitor not working with Win7-64.

Newer models are out, which may have different characteristics.

Re: Mimo Monitors

Okay. Thanks, everyone. I will go with a Mimo Monster Touch 10". I plan to run a fairly long usb cable to run from the nav station up to the helm, so I will install a usb repeater. After I get it up and running (and figure out how I want to attach it to a 1" stainless bar at the helm) I will give a report on my results.
