Merge co-located waypoints

If you make many routes in Open CPN, it happens that some waypoints will be included in several. For example, outside the home port, many routes meet at a common approach point.

If you are careful when pointing with the arrow when building new routes, you can capture a previous waypoint so that it is also included in the new route, but if you fail to point exactly right, a new waypoint is created in almost the same place.

The same problem occurs if you want to insert an existing waypoint into an existing route. I have found no method to achieve this.

It would be useful to be able to merge several waypoints that are co-located in the 'same' place, because then nearby route lines will also run together, and if you want to adjust a waypoint that is part of several routes, all of them will adjust.

Does anyone know if there is a technique for this?

The answer is no. I think you should make a feature request in tracker and vote for it and get others to vote so it become vetted!

See the opencpn.org website, top menu Tracker. You have to register.

Re: Merge co-located waypoints

There is already a Feature Request that is similar. See https://opencpn.org/flyspray/index.p...s&task_id=2648

Furthermore there is a pull request to git with suggested code to solve this.
https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN/pull/1959

Note however that there is a feature freeze for the current beta development. So this proposed change will, most likely, not make it to the next version of OpenCPN 5.2.
Perhaps to version 5.4.
Why not vote for #FS2648 in the tracker?

Re: Merge co-located waypoints

At the risk of resurrecting an old thread, i have discovered one way to do this. I created several routes over the same area (various courses for a race series) and in a few cases I missed the use close mark dialog.

What I did was close OpenCPN and open the directory where navobj.xml is stored, and then opened navobj.xml in a simple text editor. Then I carefully found the <rtept> </rtept> sections representing the waypoint I wanted to insert and then went to the route I was trying to modify (<rte></rte>) and pasted in the code from the desired waypoint. It worked fine.

I know that's probably a bit cryptic, but have a look at the navobj.xml file and you should see it there.

The Housekeeper script for the JavaScript plugin will merge co-located waypoints, having invited you to choose which one to keep. See this thread.
