Mbtiles

Hi all Mariners,

I do not know if this topic already been treated but I'd like to know if it is intended or not to implement the Mbtiles format for maps from SAS Planet ?

Thanks for your hard work.

Re: Mbtiles

edelvoilier...

Lets talk about SASPlanet a little bit. I have had not much luck learning about this technology/offering by first-order web-browsing. It can't be that complicated, and maybe I'm just dense today...

Will you teach us more?

1. How do you currently use SASPlanet?
2. What types of charts/cells/tiles are available?
3. Is it free, or a subscription service?
4. Why should an average OCPN user want/need this?

Any other SASPlanet users are welcome to pipe-in here...

Thanks
Dave

Re: Mbtiles

Hello Dave

Maitai, who is very active on CF, is an expert on Mbtiles as they are viewable in his great routing app (bordering on an chartplotter) QtVlm
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-74738-34.html
(Pic #1, 2)
I THINK this is true also of Paul Phiggins of GE2KAP fame on this forum
Sailgrib, a well respected routing Android app, can also display Mbtiles
Sasplanet, hence mbtiles, has recently become quite fashionable as you could download Navionic tiles for free. AFAIK, some people are diretly using Sasplanet as a navigation app, with the charts in cache
More to the point, using GE2KAP, you can/could create kap chartlets from Sasplanet Navionic display quite hassle free, and view them on O (Pic #3)
But Navionics has recenly cracked down on this illegal use of their charts, although a workaround has been found by the Sasplanet team. But for how long ?
Now all the very many charts available on SasPlanet (including Bing (Microsoft) great aerial / sat pics, often clearer / more recent that those on Google Earth) can be downloaded in Mbfiles format
You may want to play with Saspanet: it's worth a try.
Latest build
(I don't know wether the Navionics charts are available in this build as the workaround has received limited publicity for obvious reasons)

Re: Mbtiles

In addition to this description, it's realy easy to create a Earth view with differents zoom just 2 operations. 1 to download tiles for an area (indicate level view you want) and 2 : Create map using download tiles.

GE2KAP is a very good software to create Kap (for 1 level zoom) but if you need more for the same area you will need to do it again for just one other level. Using SAS Planet you select your area and zoom levels and click to download tiles (for all level).
