What's the advantage of BBN Marine?
What's the disadvantage of BBN Marine ;-)
Because people think the wheel is square-cut and not rounded so they invent the wheel again...
But there are several new invented wheels right now such as Navigatrix e.g. Xinutop and others.

Some people prefer very old models of wheels.
Those who think after a wheel is invented it can’t be improved.
Some people use more modern ones (would have tires and run-flat feature).

It’s a newer build distro. It
would run OpenPlotter scripts but OpenPlotter scripts are not (as of now) support it.

However it can really be used without OpenPlotter installed on it.

It should be more user friendly with day to day usage basis than Openplotter image.

It has more apps, better support for touchscreen in cockpit, more chartplotter applications.

Music player, Playing music via AirPlay from your phone.

VNC support right and install.

You can get more ideas looking at the project page.

Or even better you can download both OpenPlotter image and this one and try both with two SD cards.

There is also Getting Started Guide.

Thanks

If I choose the 32bit version (sounds like it's more compatible with various components at this time) is there, or will there be an easy upgrade path to 64bit? Or will I essentially be starting over with a vanilla install of everything when I choose to do that in the future?

I have no clear picture about upgrade pathes.
But a small hint:
If you are going to use charts from o-charts for OpenCPN or AvNav and you don't have a dongle the license is bound to your system.
And a fresh install most probably will make the license invalid thus preventing the charts from being usable...
The same problem is there for OpenPlotter btw.

It will require reinstalling from new image. I don’t think Debian or Raspberry OS will support another way. With 32-bit image you can still have 64bit kernel running with all user space programs being 32-bit.

Ouch! Thanks for the heads-up!

I have had a similar issue with other software before, and when I upgraded my computer found them to be unable to run. In those cases I contacted the seller and they gave me a new license and removed the old one from their database. I would hope that something similar was possible with o-charts.

They recommend their USB dongle for systems that can fundamentally change such as the Pi. So I’m not sure o-charts will be sympathetic.
