Mac

Hi. I am new to this forum and a new user of a macbook. I have run Open CPN on my PC and like it. I understood that a mac version was available but I have downloaded the 'source code' thingy but it has not installed the programme. Excuse my lack of technical knowledge but is this not the full programme and if not, where can I download it from? I don't understand the technical jargon re 'binary release'. Can someone please interpret for me?

Thanks

Richard Iddon.

You need to find and download the newest binary release for the Mac. (I don't have the link handy just now) The newest for the Mac is a rather old release, last time I looked. But works well. We're working on a Mac version of the latest release. The source code version is only of interest to us geeks.

I was also using the PC version before buying a new MacBook Pro.

A little further down the page at the Apple Logo is the old release candidate for Mac. file name is openCPN-1.3.6-mac-rc.zip. Actually that's a link to the download. It's from here as you know. http://opencpn.org/download

This is not as nice as the newer PC release. Has quirky behavior as well. I'm waiting for the new version. Many thanks to those who are working to get it ready.

Also try PolarView and MacENC.

PolarView and PolarCom are needed, not freeware but very reasonably priced. That and NOAA charts are good to go for me right now.

MacENC is a bit more costly. It's a little cluttered looking to me until I turn off place names.

I'm new to the lifestyle, so discount my opinion accordingly.

Coincidentally, the major boating electronics blog today reviews PolarView:
http://www.panbo.com/archives/2011/0...rime_time.html

I've been using this new version for a while since I've been working on the ActiveCaptain integration with the developer. It's quite a nice product, especially for the Mac (which is my main computer). It is extremely stable, reliable, and has good performance. A single license allow you to run it on 5 different computers (Mac, PC, Linux, backups, etc). It's quite a nice product and has a free 30-day evaluation.

Except for the ActiveCaptain connection, I have no affiliation with PolarView and we receive no license fees at all for our connection with their product.

Richard,

There is a more up-to-date version (2.2) to be found here:

Open CPN

Thnx for replies. I found the download for v1.3.6 and installed it. Seems to work fine with CM93 charts. I will try V2 as suggested to see if it is any improvement. I just need a simple plotter with capabilities to work with AIS. For main navigation I have a Raymarine plotter with charts on (expensive!) C-cards but it won't work with AIS.

Re: Mac

I just tried version 2.5.0 on my Mac and found the menus are not in English. The preference tab says English.
Any ideas?
