Lowrance Halo 20 Radar?

Hi,

I am new to radar. I have an OpenCPN on a raspberry PI 5. I have a N2K network. Which radar should I get. I have a 33 rec boat, this is my second year on a bigger boat. I had thought about getting a Raymarine Quantum™ Q24C, because of the WiFi and network connection. But I have been reading that Raymarine does not play well with opencpn...

I don't want to jump through a bunch of hoops to get this working I have a CAT6 hub and a WiFi running on a 5G network. What would be the best course of action

Re: Lowrance Halo 20 Radar?

The radar plugin is well tested and in some way dedicated to Navico. The Navico Halo's are by some the first choice to consider.

Some Quantum are supported but is not a main task for the plugin.

In general it's recommended to connect the radar scanner to a OCPN system by a IP-wire. Some "new" wifi technologies may work but I'd have prepared for a cable.

More to read in the manual.

Re: Lowrance Halo 20 Radar?

As Hakan says, the Simrad, Lowrance, and B&G branded radars (all made by Navico with different stickers) Halo and Halo+ are really easy to use with OpenCPN.

All you need is power and a wired network port (it might work over wifi, but the developers recommend a wired port). Without changing ANY settings, I have changed routers, and also plugged the Halo directly into my computer network port (no hub/router required) and each time, the software "found" the radar and was able to display the radar information without any complicating re-configuration of IP addresses. Pretty magical.
