Location in status bar

I'm running open CPN on an android tablet ( Xperia z4) and cannot figure out how to display my current location in the status bar. I only see SOG COG & scale in the status bar. This tablet has GPS chip embedded in it and the satellite icon shows it picks up a signal (2-3 green Bars).
Is this because I have no maps loaded, only the general background map? I tried looking into Options and other menus but none helped. i have not downloaded any maps because I'm in the eastern Aegean and I could not find any maps for this area. Are there any Available?
