Live Global Ais on OpenCpn

at last I can display live Ais data on OpenCpn. I use shipplotter and utility program called sp2trax it interfaces via COM with shipplotter And converts the list of ships back to a AiS data stream. there are two versions of the utility One outputs on a com port and the other outputs via Tcp. the coverage is patchy as shipplotter relies on amateur Ais reception. and of course you need a internet connection

Interesting, can shipplotter get it's data over the net then? Had a quick look at the wiki but it just talked about VHF.

Another way on windows to get net ais is to have marinetraffic on google earth then use the GE plugin in Opencpn.

Re: Live Global Ais on OpenCpn

I bought an AIS receiver from ACR called Nauticast with USB. Plug and play into OpenCPN.

I am assuming that you have PC with windows OS and that the AIS receiver is powered on?

1. Must have connection to PC from AIS receiver ( mine is USB )
2. Go into device manager find out USB port name in Ports ( COM and LPT )
3. Start OC
4. Click on the wrench icon ( commonly referred to as tools )
5. Click on connections icon
6. Add connection. enter port of AIS connection (mine says use 38K data rate)

I dont think you have to but after that I stop/start OC. Thats it, you shoud see AIS targets in OC. You then can go into tools again and cick on the ships icon and play with AIS setting. i.e., alerts, add radar rings, etc.

enjoy!
