JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

JimSke's "General Questions" about OpenCPN (who happen to be using Android).
Please note that the preferred location to ask questions about the Android version in particular is the OpenCPN Android Forum on
OpenCPN App for Android.

I suggest registering and getting on that forum as the best way to get direct answers focused on Android.

Jim, if you have some general questions about use of OpenCPN go ahead and ask them here, ok?

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Ok. Right now everything looks fine working great. Squiddio says user not allowing location in settings but I can't find where to allow the location in my settings so I haven't been able to identify any of the squiddio stuff on my phone. Question is how do I enable squiddio to see my geolocation?

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Jimske isn't the gps enabled in Andriod pull down settings? Thought it was enabled.
Maybe you need to register and log into squiddio? To get squiddio to download poi I press the left menu button at the very bottom next to the right android backup button. Then pick the download poi menu selection. Does that work?

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Yes the GPS was enabled on high accuracy I just changed it to device only. The icon for squiddo is on my chart and we don't need to register the API stuff unless you want to share information.

So if you click the chart then the squiddio poi should pop up on the chart if there is any there. If not you can add destination well you have internet service so later on you don't need to have internet service to find those destinations.

I'm in Charleston South Carolina with internet service on the hook here and I assume that squiddo is accessing my GPS but I still don't see poi's which I have to guess is a pretty popular area to see them. So I'm just trying to fix figure it out.

"To get squiddio to download poi I press the left menu button at the very bottom next to the right android backup button. Then pick the download poi menu selection. Does that work?". Not sure I understand this. I have the back button and menu button in the list button on the bottom of my phone and that's the only buttons I have.

Trying to put my lat and long into "checking in somewhere" on squiddio to see if it can see me. Can't.

Jim,
Do you see the command to "Download Squiddio POI" under the Menu button?

-The button next to the Android Backup button?

Hit that button and the poi should download.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

I only have three buttons at the bottom. The backup button on the left the menu button on the center which is round and the square button on the right which shows me what's open.

When I open the chart I see a green lighthouse icon designating squiddo on the toolbar

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

In OpenCPN, go to the Options → Plugins and enable the sQuiddio plugin (no settings are required).

To view destinations in an area:

Right-click on the area of the chart for which you want to view available Destinations.

Select*Download local sQuiddio destinations*from the contextual menu.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

When I go to dashboard and search for Marina within 5 miles of my position as example it asks me for my position and I'm not able to enter my position. And it doesn't know my position. It says user denied geolocation

Also squiddio is not included in my locations list. I don't know why or how to include it there

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Jimske...

These instructions are correct:

In OpenCPN, go to the Options → Plugins and enable the sQuiddio plugin (no settings are required).

To view destinations in an area:

Right-click on the area of the chart for which you want to view available Destinations.

Select*Download local sQuiddio destinations*from the contextual menu.

For a touch device (e.g.Android), a right-click action is generated by a so-called "long touch". Touch and hold the screen point until a context menu appears. Select the desired action.

Does this work on your device?

RGleason...
Not all phones generate an application context menu by touching the device "menu" button. Depends on Android version and device mfg. The general method is "long touch" on the chart canvas. Should work on all devices.

Thanks
Dave

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

OMG. That's a right click. I didn't know that. it worked right off the bat.

I need an internet connection which I have right now but a lot of times I lose it so what I can do is go to the chart and put it in certain points of interest ahead of time and then it will store them I think.

Thanks again for your help I feel a little dumb

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Yup. That did it in advance. I never had a chartplotter before. It's going to be a big help going down the icw solo. I'm a little more than halfway down from Nantucket period in Charleston right now. Leaving again tomorrow morning.

Thanks it's a big help.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Also FYI. I'm in a little boat, Jim Brown searunner 31 with a 9.9 outboard. So knowing the tides and currents imperative. I generally don't stop in marinas but knowing where they are in advance is also a big help. I do need gasoline
