Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Okay so I guess I downloaded the RNC and that's why on one of the regions come out with vector and raster charts. So now the question is should I download the RNC on all my charts and if not why not and if so how does that help me?

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Maybe I got it now. I didn't realize I had to go to Dave opencpn in order to download. I figured it out when I went to try to put in squiddio again. I guess I forgot or didn't know that you have to go through that for Android. So now it's preparing to files and we'll see what's next

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Jimske, you must be right, you are using RNC raster. The L & A won't work with rnc.

Jimske,

You are welcome to use anything in my tutorial. Download here.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Question: Should the Raster charts be downloaded with the ENC? What is advantage/disadvantage.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Jim, I always keep ENC and RNC in separate folders. Some people don't.
I generally use RNC with the Android version, but I did have RNC and did not keep it up to date and ended up removing that folder because I needed more room on the cell phone.

If you have folders under "Charts" IE Charts/ENC and Charts/RNC and you download each Coast Guard Region using Chartdownloader, make sure each region is pointing to an new destination subdirectory such as "Charts/RNC/GC-01" or "Charts/RNC/CG-05" and Charts/RNC/CG-07"

Then you can Add Chart pathnames to the Charts Tab, pointing to each CG region.
IE Charts/RNC/CG-07

Then in the Chart Group TAB I always make an "Empty" group after "All charts" and then make a CG05 group for example and then add the path to the group...Add path "Charts/RNC/CG-05". Now you will be able to right-click on the chart area and select "Chart Groups" and then pick "GC05" . Your android will be much faster than sorting through "ALL Charts" and you have quick access to each Chart Group all the way up and down the east coast.

Hope this is clear and answers your question.
1. I would not put them in the same directory.
2. I would keep RNC and ENC in separate directories.
3. I would have each Coast Guard Region in a separate subdirectory under RNC or ENC depending on which type of chart.
4. In Charts Tab I would add separate paths for each Coast Guard Region.
5. Then I would set up separate Chart Groups for each Coast Guard Region so I have quick access to any of them from the screen.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Just checking in. I'm not able to get opencpn to be as helpful as Navionics for instance

I do like having the RNC charts

Few nights ago coming in at dark without help would have been very difficult without Navionics.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm looking at now for instance. How does this help?Click image for larger version

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

Jimske...
May I ask what exactly you think is the difference, except that you have different settings for safe depths on your Navionics and OpenCPN?

I'm looking at this using OpenCPN and the NOAA charts and the only real difference is we use different colours and actually show a little bit more information:

Your settings for vector charts are wrong. Both for depths and lights.
This is what I see:

It is very important, when using vector charts, to be familiar with the different settings in OpenCPN. Study the manual!

... and why not use the US raster charts

I can't see any advantage with the Navionics charts. Personally I would never consider using them for actual navigation.

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

I appreciate the reply. And yes I'm still sitting here messing with this and wondering why I can't toggle even the lights onto the vector charts. I get into over Zoom very quickly with the vector charts.

The squiddio plugin seems to be working just fine.

But we somehow got the impression it was not what you were complaining about yesterday comparing the screenshot with Navionics, or was it? Can you try to clearly describe what your problem actually is?

Re: JimSke's General Questions about OpenCPN Android

So I wish someone could tell me why I can't toggle the ENC lights and Squid do doesn't show up on the charts even though it's in the toolbar.
