Re: Imgkap - kap File Converter Tool

Well, without some statement from the original author this is not open source or public domain so it cannot be officially packaged. So, no hope unless MdJ gets in touch...

That said, thanks for clarification!

Yes. Unfortunately, from a legal point of view this is not clear enough. The simplest way to resolve the ambiguity of your statement is if you could confirm that your software is in public domain -- this is a well.defined set of conditions which covers your statement if understand it correct.

I could expand on the problems of your statement, but I'm certainly no lawyer...

Cheers!

Re: Imgkap - kap File Converter Tool

Sorry
My code is mine to the writing, to the reading it is already no longer mine
And my choice is not to hide my code, nor to ask for the money

I would not sign for it to be public, because it is conversely the public who must say that this code is also his

Yours truly

Re: Imgkap - kap File Converter Tool

It is a puzzle:

Quote:
My code is mine to the writing,
MdJ is the author.

Quote:
to the reading it is already no longer mine
And my choice is not to hide my code, nor to ask for the money
The code can be read by the public and MdJ says it is no longer his code for reading. MdJ does not want to hide it and is not asking for money.

That all seems ok to me, but this one is somewhat different.

Quote:
I would not sign for it to be public, because it is conversely the public who must say that this code is also his
So he is suggesting that the public must claim that the code is public?

Re: Imgkap - kap File Converter Tool

It seems pretty clear he doesn't understand the legal meaning of "public domain" in the US. It seems pretty clear that his intention is to allow his code to be used freely by anyone. It sounds to me like that meets the definition of public domain.

Re: Imgkap - kap File Converter Tool

Hello,

Following the private exchange with Alec to resolve this issue and after reading https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-di...-public-domain

I agree to put the open source code, as proposed by Alec.

In order to clarify the interest of imgkap, the code contains 2 most important parts:

Encoding and decoding the kap format, with a recursive function for encoding

Color reduction, with optimized color histogram and color reduction algorithm by calculating the distance between colors in the RGB cube. This last algorithm is perfectible, but it is already at the level of the best, photoshop, gimp ... being much faster.

Re: Imgkap - kap File Converter Tool

Hi M'dJ

So, after some messaging you have have approved this patch [attached below]. This effectively makes imgkap open source software distributed under a GPL-3+ license. If you don't have any comments on it I will interpret it as an approval.

Sorry to bring the patch as a MS-word document, but the forum software given me no better options given the 1.5K size of the patch. A temporary link is at https://paste.fedoraproject.org/past...KspesHUutyPa4Q

Cheers!

New attempt:

Hi M'dJ

So, after some private messaging you have approved the enclosed patch which effectively makes imgkap open source software distributed using a GPL-3+ license. This is great and should resolve any legal issues with imgkap.

Sorry to bring the patch as a MS-Word document, but the forum software gives me no better options given the 1.5K size of the patch.

If there is no objections or other input on this I will eventually make a PR against Pavel's github repo.

EDIT: links are moderated, a regular patch link is at h.t.t.p.s //paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/96x40cfJKspesHUutyPa4Q (sane link waiting for approval)

EDIT2: This became messy, I thought my first post was lost when it was moderated. Sorry for three messages instead of one
