So, there are different use cases, always.
All that said, putting this function back as a hidden config setting, (default OFF) is trivial, and I see no reason not to do that. But I would resist adding another checkbox to the already cumbersome settings UI for this function.

If the OpenCPN
team plans to reintroduce the feature into the next build that is excellent. Even a config file modification would be very good.
Since the impetus for doing so is likely due to my pestering I would like to make a monetary contribution for the effort. Should I do that as a regular contribution to the general project
or as some kind of line item payment like a fee? Either way is fine with me.
I am happy to pay to have the option back for my use and for anyone else who uses OpenCPN
