Huge HDR files during conversions

Hi, thanks for the forum. I'm making great progress following the conversion instructions at
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...on_using_linux
I have PCX and TIF files, they are lovely. And I can calibrate them with MapCal.

But I go aground at Step 4:
Generate the chart header from the command line:
Code:
mc2bsbh CHARTCAL.DIR
You should see:
Code:
Create CHART.hdr
where CHART is the chart name you entered with MapCal

I do indeed see this line but it hangs. Looking at the file explorer I see the .hdr file growing bigger and bigger. It was up to 16 GB before I aborted.

I've tried several times with the same result.

Any ideas on what is going wrong? I tried with both large and small scale charts, figuring that the small scale might generate a bigger .hdr file but the large scale charts do the same thing...

System is Linux Mint 18, wine-3.0.2, and Windows 10.

Thanks again for the forum.

Best regards,
Andy

Have you reviewed the following:

imgkap and kap

bsb-kap format

Thomas may see this and have some suggestions.

Oh well, nevermind.

I did it again and this time it worked instantly, no problems. I may have messed up the calibration last night.

Now to figure out some way of automating the calibration process... AutoKey perhaps.

Thanks again, sorry for the bother.

Cheers, Andy

Re: Huge HDR files during conversions

Andy,

There are scripts available to aid the conversion process. See the wiki.

If you have any suggestions/improvements of the documentation, it would be very much appreciated.

Yes thank you. Those are the processes I was following. It is, admittedly, drinking from a firehose... :-)

Problem solved, I must have had the calibration or borders messed up. Repeated today with no problems after choosing Set border to Image in MapCal.

Also, discovering the tiny + and - zoom buttons was very helpful...

Cheers, Andy

Thank you. Watch this space!

I'm working on a Python script with tkinter to automate portions of the MapCal step of this process. More firehose drinking, but easy when you know how!

Very cool on setting up the Wiki!!

Thanks again, Andy
