I’ll only add to the comment about
depth calibration as the rest has been covered. I operate a number of
boats in shallow areas. All too often the
depth has been set to “under keel” and usually has some added “safety cushion” of a foot or two. When poking around in shallow
water the actual depth is what I look for knowing charted depth and state of tide. When I start seeing negative depth and I’m still moving all I can do is ignore the instrument as useless and go by visual. This defeats the purpose and reduces the
safety that was intended. I calibrate using a
rope and weight in the
water to set the depth to match. I know what depth I’m looking for and the actual depth is the most useful.
