Help needed. USB Receiver Connection.
Hello,
I am running openCPN on Mac OSX 10.11.4 as well as on Parallels 11.1.0 and Windows 10. I have installed the latest Prolific driver for Mac. I bought a new GPS receiver from Globalsat, because they told me the previous one will not work with Win 10.
Despite the fact, that the Receiver works as shown in the screenshot of GPs Utility for Mac I cant connect it with neither openCPN 4.2.0 for Mac nor with openCPN 4.2.0 in Parallels and Win 10.
Can anybody help?
I do need a step by step description in both cases. Please see the screeshots attachted.
Regards

Re: Help needed. USB Receiver Connection.
I can't read the screen shot, but have you selected the proper port? Tools/Options/Add connection then find the proper USB port

I cant find the port. Why cant you read the screenshots. Are they too small?

Re: Help needed. USB Receiver Connection.
If you have the port in the drop list of ports, it should connect.
Did you say "Ok" or "Anwenden" and does it appear then in the list of connections ("Verbindungen") above?
I have no clue about Parallels - for example what happens when you have the serial port running under OS-X and at the same time from Parallels.
The GPS can just take one connection at a time, I believe.

Yes.
When the GPS is plugged in there should be a drop-down of COMM ports. I'm not a Mac guy, but there should be the equivalent of a Device Manager so you can see if the computer recognizes the GPS

Re: Help needed. USB Receiver Connection.
I got it running on my Mac. But still have the same problems with Win 10. Ther is no poin"Ports" on my Device-Manger (s.screenshot).
Therefor I dont know, which port I shall put into the openCPN mask

Re: Help needed. USB Receiver Connection.
So one problem crushed - can you tell us how?
For the second one: You will need to know how to install or access to an USB device under Parallels: how does Parallels know that a device or USB port is for the Windows client client operating system and how to enable it?
Anybody?

Parallels as well as the competitor VMware Fusion does not allow to use the USB connectors both for OS X and the virtual machine at the same time. When connecting something to USB they asks you wether it should be used for OS X or the virtual machine.
BTW I have explained aguenther something with a personal mail.
On the other hand the handling of external devices with OpenCPN is not state of the art. That is archaic and was done so 10 years ago.

Your pointers to the "state of the art"
- analysis
- lectures
- examples
- white papers
and perhaps some proposals? I'm always very keen to learn and to look over the fence.

A very simple example you have seen here already. aguenther was able to connect his GPS without any problems to the GPSNavX software but not to OpenCPN. And perhaps if you follow this forum: Each week there are some users asking for help to connect their GPS devices. Why?

Re: Help needed. USB Receiver Connection.
MY Mac running Win 7, Boot Camp, and a couple Nav programs, works fine. My backup PC, now on Win 10, still runs Nav programs, but many older programs will not run. It soon will go back to Win 7.
Win 10 uses so much cpu and memory, sometimes it can take minutes for programs to open. So long that I assumed they didn't start until running task manager. It reminds me of promises and reality of Widows 95.

That's not even an observation.
A "Stammtisch Argument" - One does know it better....
