Help: How can I get rid of text 'clutter'

Sorry, I have searched and can't find, but I have to believe that I am not the only person to ask this, just can't find it.

See pic. All the text when zoomed out is just a mass of clutter. What box do I check to turn this off?

Sigh yourself. I usually like your posts, but clearly you are full of yourself today. Do you know if this works? Did you try it?

IT DOESN'T.

But after playing with every single check box I could see, not getting it to work, I Put up this post.

Frustrated, but still seeing clutter, I then realized that there was also the main menu on top, and under the View dropdown, was Show ENC Text , hotkey T. I unchecked this, and voila, it worked.

You could also go into the Settings/Options dialog, and in the Vector Chart Display settings select the option for de-cluttered text. This is supposed to intelligently attempt to figure out how much to text to display depending on zoom level (that way you don't have to be turning text on and off as you zoom). Play with it, you may or may not like the results - the decluttering is based on a programmer's opinion, which may or may not match yours.

Another option is to change the "Display Category" shown at the bottom of your screen shot to something like "Minimum". Again, play with it, as the programming decisions that go into that may not be the same as yours.

His problem isn't with vector chart text those are waypoints. Alass in OCPN there is no key to turn off only way points without selecting them all in the manager.

To the OP: you can choose to have way points only display when zoomed in to a scale of your choice. Unfortunately for pre existing way points you have to edit each one individually as OCPN does not have a bulk edit mode.

From the picture I get the impression all text are from waypoints?
If so there's an option to not show text at small scales. See Waypoint properties->Extended->[] Show at scale > 1:xxx.
On the bottom left corner of the same dialog there's a tool to set it generally.

Now when it's already there you've to go into one and every WP to adjust. If it's a layer you can edit the gpx file with "find and replace".

Thanks, I missed that. I guess I so rarely name my own waypoints that the short number doesn't cause the same problem for me. Learn something new...

Why don't the vector charts have text names on country, towns, harbor, ports, bouys and waters?


Which is essentially the reverse of Remove text clutter.


But maybe some of the suggestions in this thread should be used to create another FAQ just below to "Remove text clutter"?
