Feet / Fathoms on ENC charts

I installed OpenCPN and NOAA's ENC charts and it seems to work great. I selected to have the depths shown in feet instead of fathoms, but I am a little confused. When a depth on the chart is in fathoms, as an example, it shows a zero with subscript five after it. I thought that would mean that the depth was five feet. However, when I switch the view from fathoms to feet, it shows the same depth as a three with a subscript 2 after it. Does that mean three feet, two inches?

I would prefer to keep it so that the chart shows the depths in feet, but I am confused! What would the real depth be in this example? Thanks for any replies!

nskinn,

Depths are in units and tenths. So, if the units are set to feet and the display show 12 with subscript of 4 equals 12.4 feet.

You need to get the charts separately at the NOAA. In the tools menu, try finding the foler your downloaded charts are in. You may also wish to try the documentation wiki

Charts?

Thanks but I've done all that I think properly. I am able to select the files from those I've downloaded, add selection, putting them in the lower window, and then hit OK which gives me a window on the screen display (very briefly) that I supposed is loading the chart into OCPN. Then, nothing. No chart outline on the display, the window still says no charts available. I'm sure I'm just thick, but I feel like I'm. Thanks for any help at all.

Files? Maybe just spelling, but you should select folders (where charts files are stored).

Ciao, Marco.

I am having same problem as abcnuzeman i.e. I can select chart folders--cm93 and the OpenCPN folder which is supposed to have sample charts--but nothing appears in the program window after I select ok. I have a blank black window with blue outlines around continents. I have a new laptop which I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7.

I think this might be a problem with international character sets. The name of the folder should not contain e.g. the danish 'æ','ø','å' and equivalent in other languages. So check the name of the folder try to rename it and then try again. The 'opencpn.log' might (I think) contain an error message, so the log-file migtht be checked also.

Hope it helps..

"abcnuzeman" and "a_hoffner"

If you still have problems.......

There are instructions for installing charts here: Installing Charts |

If nothing works for you, please create a new directory, or folder if you prefer. Download the three sample charts for Puerto Rico on the above page. Point OpenCPN at this directory. If still no charts are visible, please post your log files here.

I should have said above that I had no success bringing up charts even after creating a new folder for them.

Please read the instructions on the opencpn.org, that I linked to in an earlier post.
What I can see in the log is that first you had
C:\cm93\ as an active directory and later added C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN
There is a problem with your CM93 installation, but this is the wrong end to start solving your problems.
OpenCPN can't find any charts in C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN, as there don't seems to be any charts installed with the default installation any more.

Quote:
To get you started quickly, here are three sample charts from Purto Rico: one, two and three. Right click and use "Save Link As", or similar. Just clicking shows you the actual file as a text file, this is an advanced subject, to be treated later.
You can use the chart links above for download. Put these three charts in one directory(folder). Point OpenCPN to this directory. Make sure that you can see just this directory in the "Active Chart Directory" window between the two buttons "Add Selection" and "Delete Selection. Click the "OK" button.
Move to the Puerto Rico area. If you have ticked the "Show chart outlines" box in the Toolbox ==> Settings tab you will see the red outlines of the three charts .

There are no signs of this in the log.

I've installed the maps into a folder C:\CPNmaps (chart labeled "two" has same number as "one" so only got two charts) which I then set up as the active chart directory for Opencpn. The program now shows me a white outline off the east coast of PR, but still says no chart available and nothing appears in the outline when I zoom in. I tried to uninstall opencpn so I could reinstall; ran uninstall but opencpn still exists in the program directory, has executable file, but is now not on list of programs installed so no wizard for uninstalling it, and can't find uninstall program for it in help files...shall I resend log? I really appreciate your help!

Yes, please send the log again. You only need to copy the relevant lines for your last try. If in doubt, send it all!

Thomas

PS Thank you for pointing out the error with the chart numbers. Here is the missing file:one

On second thought. If you zoom in a bit on the white thing you see, and then click in the middle of it. Do you then see something similar to the bar below, at the bottom of the screen, but with blue instead of green? If so click at the blue field.
