Grib extension causing seg fault / 5.8.4 / Linux

Hi, I decided to try the GRIB plugin for the first time, haven't been able to go very far.

I get this error in the terminal window used to launch OpenCPN (repeated several times until segmentation fault (core dumped):

Grib ERROR: unknown Discipline 2 dataCat 0 dataNum 2
Grib ERROR: unknown Discipline 2 dataCat 0 dataNum 192
Grib ERROR: unknown Discipline 2 dataCat 3 dataNum 192

Am I doing something wrong?

OpenCPN 5.8.4 installed from deb on Linux Mint 22.
Package: opencpn
Version: 5.8.4+dfsg-1build4
Priority: optional
Section: universe/misc
Origin: Ubuntu
Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers <ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com>

Thanks

What Grib file are you trying to open? The messages you see mean it contains some data that the Grib plugin does not understand, that is quite normal and does not mean OpenCPN should crash, neither does give any clue why it does.

I was trying to open one of the grib2 files found here (not at computer now, can't tell you which was it, but I tried 2 different ones, same result):
https://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/dat...1222/00/atmos/

I have downloaded them via ftp.
Actually, I think it was these two

https://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/dat...xgrbf000.grib2
https://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/dat...xgrbf001.grib2

Re: Grib extension causing seg fault / 5.8.4 / Linux

Is there any reason why you actually try to use these? This is raw data that is used by other services to produce datasets usable by tools like OpenCPN's grib plugin, not targeting end-users.

With your OpenCPN version you can request usable grib data from Saildocs via e-mail, if you upgrade to 5.10, also direct download of gribs derived from ECMWF open datasets, XyGrib (GFS and some other models) and some local high resolution models from OpenSkiron and other sources is available.

The request via email button did nothing, so I followed the instructions in David Burch Navigation Blog: Timing and Time Structure in Model Forecast Gribs

When I get back to the computer (traveling now) I'll get 5.10 downloaded manually . Just realized my Linux downloaded the older version through the package manager.

If it doesn't work I'll report back.

You did not use the files David talks about (eg. gfs.t12z.pgrb2.0p25.f000, which OpenCPN's grib plugin opens just fine, just ignoring the unknown fields).
But not even those are what you probably want to use as each time step is around 500MB, which is by two orders of magnitude more than what a usual size of the whole preprocessed long term forecast grib file is.
